WTF: Picture Framing

You would think, considering my father has been a pro wedding photographer my whole life, that I would have an idea of how much it costs to have a picture professionally framed. GOOD GOD!!!!!
I bought a numbered print from an artist I really enjoy and the frame ended up costing more than the print! And the print wasn't cheap!!!
At least it's gonna look awesome.

It is seemingly ridiculous. makes me tempted to just go to the local "Michael's" craft store and get shit to do it myself for some concert posters I have.

I have some fine art on canvas over wood frames that remain unframed, but a couple of the smaller ones I would consider framing in something that would highlight the art. But I am wary of the cost. I don't think I would get what I want for that faming at the craft store. I have a framer/photographer client who needs some basic legal work done. Maybe I can work out a trade.
 
I usually go to Michael’s for framing, it’s usually around $150 for a decent frame for the concert prints I get framed.

We've a gorgeous Indonesian tapa we're going to get framed once we start decorating the new house and it's going to cost hundreds to have it done professionally.

I'm probably being really naive here but surely it's not that difficult to build a decent frame if you've a mitre block and are semi competent at DIY?

Frames are relatively easy. I have all of the tools to build one but my shop isn't fully back to workable yet. It's damn close though. I just wanted to get this one done professionally since it's a nice piece.

To clarify, I'm getting this done at Michael's. It's a double 3D mat with a really cool carved frame. $300.
The real reason I didn't build this myself is the print is 11 3/16th x 16 5/8ths with a hand ripped border so I wasn't sure I wanted to spend the time getting everything even and straight.
 
Do yourself a favor an spring for the 'museum glass' or equivalent when you get good work framed or DIY. It's coated to cut down on glare & reflections plus blocks more uv than standard glass. I have stuff framed with museum glass and standard glass and the difference is easily noticeable.

It was about 65 bucks back in 91-92. But then again, there were shopping malls and every one of them had a shop, so... Competition...
