Phil Collins v Peter Gabriel

Phil or Peter?

Peter. The whole live aid era Phil turned me off to him forever. Plus Peter was a better songwriter. See Ddbobs note above.

I am changing my vote to Peter and this is why...

Solsbury Hill
Here comes the Flood
Games without Frontiers
Shock the Monkey
Red Rain
In your Eyes
Digging in the dirt

Any single one of these songs and a fair amount more from Gabriel are better than all of Phil's solo stuff.

Full transparency, I enjoy a decent bit of Phil's stuff too. It's just like comparing fine chocolate to paste.

Peter is the better songwriter of the two. But Phil will always be one of my favourite drummers, and to be fair he did have quite a few good songs.
A lot of the criticism, sometimes abuse, towards Phil has been way over the top.
And Genesis post-Peter was very very good up to and including Duke imo. Trick of the Tail is probably still one of my favourite Genesis albums. Seriously good stuff.

This......

Peter. Phil did a great job of taking over for Peter when he left Genesis, but his solo career got too Pop/Top-40 for me.

I don't particularly like either but Id say Phil has the edge. Better musician.
I think.

End of the day, the better musician is the one who makes the better music.

I am an extremely skilled and varied musician.

I am not a better musician than Bob Marley was.

In a piano duel, I could destroy a deaf Beethoven.

I am not a better musician than Beethoven.

Peter Gabriel's first album was awesome, but later ones less so. Phil Collins is a better singer, but his music sucks. I hold him personally responsible for destroying Genesis, whether it was his fault or not.

Oh, and he's a fantastic drummer.

On one hand, Phil Collins gets a ton of undeserved flack for the direction Genesis took in the eighties. The other two guys are just as responsible, it's just Phil is the most well known.

On the other hand, he won't do Abacab live anymore because he says the lyrics are too abstract and he doesn't understand them, so maybe it is his fault.

I don't really care for either, but if forced to listen to one I'd generally prefer Phil, with the exceptions of Solsbury Hill and In Your Eyes.

Phil won an Acadamy Award for the Tarzan song. Yeah, that's an Oscar.
