I had never heard this song until I heard this cover.
Similar for me. My dad listened to a lot of that old school country when I was growing up in the 60s/70s...Hank Williams, Roger Miller, George Jones, etc. He used to watch Hee-Haw every Saturday night. While I liked Roy Clark's playing as a kid, I'd tune out when Buck and the Buckaroos would come on. Now I really like all that stuff. Was it early exposure as a child, or just changing tastes? Who knows? Maybe some of both. The vocals for the "Wild as the West Texas wind. . ." line get me every time. I think my dad introduced me to Marty Robbins and Sons of the Pioneers when I was like 8 or something. Didn't really dig it at the time, but I sure do now.
