Official MWGL Disc Golf Thread...

Wondering if there are others of you out there who have taken up this sport, or have been playing for years?

I used to play Ultimate Frisbee in college and the once or twice I tried to flip one of those small, heavy, disc golf pucks I thought... what in the actual fuck?

But when we had an unseasonably warm day in November and I was sick of being inside (while recovering from my hand surgery and couldn't play any guitar), I picked up two discs from a local Meijer big-box store... then drove across the train tracks to a disc golf course in the woods to see if it was fun or not.

Well... it was pretty addictive... and then along comes Randy (@Modern Saint )

He says "Oh yeah, I've been into the sport for a while" and sends me some used discs so I can learn the drivers, mids, putters... my wife and kids see it as something that they can buy gifts for me for Christmas that aren't $2000 guitars... and I also get drawn like an A.D.D. moth to the sparkly pink plastics and multicolor foil artwork.

:annoyed: There's no hope for me now... :baimun:

After buying some brand new putting discs from Sweden, and some used discs from Modern Saint.... I text him "Okay... I'm done for now. I don't need anymore discs this month." :helper:

When picking up a pizza, I look at a Facebook buy/sell group that @Modern Saint had me join.... and sonofabitch if I didn't buy another disc standing there in line to pick up the pizza.

I said "Oh great.... now we are both @mystixboi1 ing discs.

I used to play it high school. It was mostly just to have something to do while smoking pot because the course was pretty secluded and nobody was ever there.

I wouldn't mind taking up disc golf. We have been camping at a couple of lakes fairly often. Both have really good disc golf courses.

Back in 87 I was stationed and there was a course in town. Played a couple times. That’s the only course I’ve ever seen.

It's pretty big here in Finland. Never did it myself, tbh, it looks kinda goofy :embarrassed:

Vastly prefer its existence over real golf though, at least no acres of perfectly fine nature have to be waltzed to make a course.

There was a huge course very close to our house when we lived on the edge of the city next to a forest. It's pretty hilarious to see the difference in how serious people take it here. Some are really, really fanatical, while others walk around with more beers than discs in their bag just having a good time. All sharing the (public) course.

@ColourofFire ... really no different than most sports.

I remember going to some tournaments with my wife's family when her Mom and Brother were competing in bowling competitions. I was thinking "the game that people get together after work and consume massive quantities of beer while playing? But played seriously?"

Depending on how up the rankings the events were, there was less and less beer... more accessories and people with rolling carts full of different balls all custom weighted and fitted to their fingers. I kept going back to "but... bowling?"

And then fast forward to the last decade or so where you go by any park or college campus and you're likely to find kids running around with brooms between their legs, throwing a ball, and pretending to play the Harry Potter sport of Quidditch. Any sport with a frisbee looks pretty normal after that.

Best sport ever!!!

Took me long enough to figure some of it out. Notice the word sum!!!!

What is the coolest though is being able to take your bag when travel and go play new courses. For me, I have played in Hawaii, California (duh), Phoenix, AZ, Minneapolis, MN and Seattle, WA. Looking to travel more in the future and playing more courses.

There is an app called U-Disc that will tell the location of all DG courses around the world.

If you have an interest, hit me up.

Need a @Baimunstock so I can come play in Indiana!!!

One of the really cool things about playing DG all of the relationships one builds. Just like MWGL, I built friendly relationships with many from DG pages where we all share the same interest.

Yesterday I met BRW for the first time in person. We have been chatting on and off for the past 2 or so years (sounds like MWGL eh @baimun) and he had a business trip out to the West Coast. Best part we got to play a round of DG at Ken Malloy before he left this morning to go back home to Wisconsin. Cool part is that BRW was at the Pro Level for a short period of time. Injuries and life come into play.

Just got a bag from @Modern Saint … so nice to be able to sort my drivers (Left), Mids and Putters (Right)… and my favorite putters have a special pocket.

Left some spaces on the left for some new discs that are coming in next week. :baimun:

Dang dude, it filled up quickly and will be stuffed soon!!!

Use the right pocket for your putters. It will hold up to 3 of them.

Probably not for me, but I think it’s more likeable and respectable than the real golf.

Of course, neither of them are nearly as good as dart golf or miniature golf.
