Official Guitar Center Going Out Of Business Doomsday Clock Thread

Considering that every time I go into a GC there is usually someone cranking the shit out of some ill configured Mesa product, I wouldn't want to buy one off the floor of a GC either.

This. I didn't even know a mark v could sound bad until I saw some kid playing on one a while back.

I doubled my money on the stock a while ago when they went from public to private. Unfortunately I only had 50 shares. I think I paid like 30 and Bain bought it for 60. Wish I had the guts to buy more when it dropped to 8 prior to Bain's purchase.

It probably has a lot to do with the guitar being out of tune and having dead strings. That’s pretty common at Guitar Center.

One of the worst music store random customer player experiences I've ever had was a guy trying to play master of puppets and freak on a leash through a triple at ear bleeding volumes in a Sam Ash with out a single sales person in sight.

...a lot like this

It's like the last scene from Blair Witch, only scarier somehow.

I've had an outstanding order in a ship-to-store situation, and I've been waiting since Thanksgiving. It was listed as in-stock, and I was immediately notified that it was out of stock and I'd be notified when it came in. Now I'm wondering if I just cancel the order, rather than let them declare bankruptcy owing me a couple hundred dollars.

It's interesting that Bain picked them up, since their modus operandi is generally to screw over the employees to save the company. As I understand it, their employees couldn't have a worse deal than they've had all along, so where's the fat to cut, besides retracting all of the growth?

According to the internet Bain has cut salaries multiple times since buying GC. I don’t know if that’s really true or just coming from the Bain hate-mill that’s grown up over the years. But Bain doesn’t just cut fat, they also expand, and that seems to be a big part of the GC business model. GC would be a much smaller company, and be far less relevant as a mail-order business, had Bain not bought it and consolidated GC and MF.

Then, they do this: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Cheektowaga-Grand-Opening-g27054t0.gc?rel=email&source=4TP4AED

The whole GC and MF thing happened way before Bain. I worked for them in 2001 and GC and MF were a thing even back then.

Just got an email that they were canceling my order after several weeks. Ordered something equivalent from Sweetwater, and it will be here in two days.
