Congrats on the JM. I’ve had a number of them. I think I’ve had more Strats overall and probably more T-style guitars than JMs. (I tend to hang on to teles longer than Strats so I’ve had fewer). But probably neck and neck between JMs and the number of SGs I’ve cycled through.

My last JM had the Pure Vintage 65s. They sound good, but they’re doing the mid 60s bright JM thing and they are noisy. I found it difficult to record with them other than on the middle position because of the significant 60 cycle hum. My house is old and I’m never in a pristine environment so that could have been part of it.

I always think I’m going to lean into the whole glide guitar thing and become a wang bar guy when I get a JM, but I never do other than just fussing with technique and then getting cranky because the attack/decay I’m expecting to hear doesn’t pan out the other 98% of the time.

I could upgrade to a mastery bridge and this, I suppose, and then it would have the Fender script on it which is nice.

Thanks! Didn't you have a cool kinda forest green (maybe metallic forest green) one sometime back? I liked that one. I found some JM discussion you had posted a few years ago, and found this type of guitar as a starting point, via your post in an old thread.

I will say that I took the JM to a band audition last night and got to crank the guitar up for the first time with the Lollars and was VERY pleased with what I heard. I still cut through plenty but it wasn't ice-picky like I found the 65s to be.

Now that I think about it, I actually did have a set of the Curtis Novak "Wide Range Jazzmaster" pickups in an MIJ Jazzmaster I used to have. I remember them sounding quite good but they are basically Fender Wide Range CuNiFe humbuckers in a Jazzmaster housing so they sounded more like a Tele Deluxe than a JM. No hum though!

Yah, I want my JM to sound like a JM. Some hum will be just fine.

You could always play the guitar for a little bit after you get it before going mod crazy....see what direction you actually want to go based on how it responds in your context.

Yes. Was thinking the bridge would likely want to be done, based on what folks all say. But I can see what I can do to make it work as it arrives for a while and take it slowly and do a bit at a time. But still interested in window shopping meantimes.

One thing I'd keep in mind when you're auditioning your new guitar is that between the switching configs and tone knob, there's a wide palate of tones you can squeeze from a JM.

I am very interested to see how the tones compare, alike and different from my favorite modded tele with the P90 in the neck, and A3 "rock wind" bridge pickup. Recognizing that a P90 is not a JM pickup, and a tele is not a JM at all. But just interested.

Going from memory of my tele w/ the A3, not very similar. Granted, several years between the two.

The guitar came with A5 tele pick ups, and was very ice pick bright. The mods made it one of my more versatile guitars, IMO. And yeah, not expecting it to be the same at all. Just curious about the compare and contrast. I have a 2xP90 Epi LP Special that I will most likely sell to help fund this that I also want to compare/contrast. Not expecting that to be very similar at all.

I haven't gotten myself a Mastery, yet, but I have a Tuffset on my Enterprise Jazzmaster and a couple of Staytrems. I've been pretty happy with those.

So, my personal experience unfortunately isn't with either Lollars or Novaks, so much of my opinion on them is based out of spec an other people's experiences, and my experience with how Seymour Duncan designs pickups in general as far as the Antiquities.

What I can tell you about are EMGs, Bullock A2s, Sunday Handwound Woodies (non-plus bridge), and the '59 inspired custom wind (not the 5859 pickups) that Tim at SHW did for me.

I would say that the Woodies are comparable to the Antiquity I set but slightly brighter. The '59 set is probably actually closer since they're a touch darker sounding.

So, ultimately, are you looking for an era-specific type sound? Are you going mix-and-match? Do you have an idea of what the current pickups in each position need compared to what they have? I know you said you're leaning more towards the darker Lollar sound in general, but do you want the neck to be brighter? If I were you, I'd be looking in the low 8K range for winding with plain enamel wire. A2 if you want darker, A5 if you want a little more on the top end. If you want something with a brighter neck, go for the SHW Iola set, like what Puisheen has in his Sparkle Jazzmaster. It's a 5859 neck and a Woody+ in the bridge.

Also, as far as the bridges... Yeah, a lot of mine have blue threadlocker on them. LOL I've come to prefer Mustang-type bridges. I also came to find that the 9.5" radius version of the American Pro bridge is really not any different than the Squier Classic Vibe bridge that I sell on Reverb. Your JM is 9.5" radius?

For the trem, I'd disassemble it and clean up the edge of the pivot plate (they're die cut but never clean up the edge like they do on the AVRI trem) and put a Staytrem arm on it.

HNOD to me! I have to figure out how the controls work as I’m not used to it particularly the pick up selector and wonder if a switch isn’t working right. But I like the sounds as a starting point

The thee way toggle doesn't seem to be working right. Won't hold in bridge position and pops back out. Hmm. Not sending it back for that but seems strange. Have to drive to Boise but will bring this guitar and explore further. I like the sounds. That TV Yellow Epiphone is going to be sold. I like this way better. My short scale guitars will be my Hagstrom and my LP knockoff, and a beater Firefly I have.
