NGD ... going back

I recently came across a pretty good deal on a Charvel Guthrie Govan signature. Even though I never played one, all of the reviews I read about it mention how fantastic it feels and how amazing it sounds. I pulled the trigger and got the guitar yesterday. Behold...

The seller mentioned in the listing that it had a small ding on top of the guitar but he didn’t even bother taking a picture of it because he said it wasn’t noticeable and he never even noticed it until the second or third day.

I immediately contacted him about it and he said that what I showed in the pictures wasn’t there when the Guitar shipped. The box and the case that it came in and were in absolute perfect condition though.... I don’t believe it.

Needless to say, it is going back. He agreed to do a full refund. But I was annoyed because he initially said that I should just except the guitar because I got a good deal on it. That’s bullshit. If I’m going to spend over $2000 on a guitar, it better be in amazing condition and at least in the condition that was described to me.

I will say that it is easily the best playing guitar I have ever played. Playability was excellent and it is friggin versatile.

That's a 'small' ding? O.o

I guess if the guitar played really well, and a good amount was taken off the price for the ding, personally I could accept it. But I'm not you, Mystix. If it bothers you that much, then yeah, back it goes.

It is quite a ding, but considering that guitar costs about $3000 new, if I got a good deal on it, I would take it. It’s not that it is going to affect the actual playability or sound or even integrity of the guitar.

I thought about keeping it for a good bit but knowing how I am, I will probably sell it at some point and I know I wouldn’t be able to make the money back. What are my rules with buying and selling is that I never buy something that I know I can at least break even on

Yeah....that is way beyond a small ding.

At least you know how good the guitars are now and can wait for another deal on one in better shape.

I have wanted to hear from someone that played one. Sorry it came fucked up. Glad to know it’s as nice as the reviews say.

kinda sucks but its almost better when you return them, saves on having to try to sell them right?

I'd return it on principle, but would consider keeping it if I loved the playability and sound, depending on the price paid.
Note: I keep most of my guitars and rarely sell them.

That is a big ding.
I would send that back too.
You don't spend that much for a damaged guitar.

On the other hand it is a start of the relic process.

Don’t know how much he spent, but if he got a good deal, I would have tried knocking off an additional sum for cosmetic repairs

No doubt he would have had it refinished in purple sparkle anyway

He stated $2k in the OP.
A few $ knocked off might be ok for some people.
It depends on the guitar ,and how much the buyer likes it.

Damn! You can't even flip a pancake that fast! New Mystix record has been set!

Joking aside, the dude is an asshat for not being totally forthcoming.

But...

If I were dropping that much coin on a guitar, and the seller mentioned ANY type of aesthetic flaw, I'd want clear pictures before blindly pulling the trigger. I think you got a bit over anxious with lust here at the expense of due caution.

"Small ding" is a ludicrously broad term in guitardom. It's relative and subjective at once. One guy's small ding is another guys huge dent. I see guitars listed all the time described with "normal wear and tear" and "great condition" that look like they spent a weekend being tag teamed by @Prages lawnmower and @baimun s belt sander.

Gotta be a bit more cautious than that, especially on high end gear. I don't fault your returning it at all, or the reasoning behind it. If you couldn't flip it without taking a loss, you of all people should absolutely send it back. Good on the seller to agree to a full refund.

Personally, having the guitar in my posession and having verified it's greatness, I'd have tried to negotiate a partial refund large enough to mitigate any future loss potential. Most sellers would prefer that to having to refund the whole amount before having to re-list it and take the risk of more damage from at least two more journeys through the shipping process.

Exactly this.

I’d probably try to negotiate a partial refund first, though.

But in John’s case, it’s not as though the guitar was ever going to stick around for long anyway, so it’s definitely smarter for him to stick with instruments that don’t have battle scars that would easily compromise resale value. This isn’t a well-used vintage Fender or Gibson.
