Nope, they are regular old Celestions. You can actually peel the Hellatone label off to reveal the Celestion label underneath.

Yeah I read the Avatar quote as well. But for $99 it doesn't make any sense as a new unbroken in Celestion can be bought for $125 - What gives? :shrug:

Breaking in the speaker doesn't harm them. It's just getting rid of the month long process of breaking them in yourself.

I don't know that it makes a whole lot of difference, though the one time I've ordered new speakers, they definitely sounded stiffer the first few weeks I had them than they did after they were played for a bit.

Saving a bit of money on the same speaker is a win, IMO.

The breaking in part is not my confusion so much. It is the cheaper part that I question. Are the speakers seconds, flawed, that kind of stuff. You would believe that a speaker that is a true G12M-12 Greenback broken in would cost more, not less. That is my misunderstanding.

The speakers aren't flawed at all. They are just rebranded. Celestion has a minimum advertised price. Hellatone does not.
 
Well - some good news and some bad news.

Good news - the amp tech said the current speaker I have in there probably does not need to be replaced.

Bad news - he said I had a 'spectacularly bad' set of tubes in the amp and the entire set needed replacing. $208.00 for the new tubes..:facepalm:

But he did mention that I probably will be pretty happy with the way the amp sounds and won't need the new speaker.

What's that amp got, 3 preamp and two power amp tubes?

Like the others said, Is he using NOS tubes?

Two power tubes, four preamp tubes, one rectifier tube, two tubes that power reverb and phase inverter...

Yeah. A complete tube set for the DRRI online for good tubes usually runs $160.00 to $175.00 so he is not out of line at all considering he did the install and the biasing.

makes more sense then.
 
I didn't realize it had a tube rectifier and tube driven reverb. The rectifier tube is probably 1/4 of the price. I'd make sure he gives you your old tubes back though. The rectifier tube probably still has years of life left in it.
 
IMO I would change the output tubes first unless you have the funds to outfit the whole amp. It is the output tubes that take the beating anyway. I don't mess with Preamp tubes unless - 1) microphonic; 2) headroom selection (gain); experiment.

The rectifier tube is the original - not replaced. He also kept one of the pre-amp tubes.
2 Tung-Sol 6V6GT matched pair power tubes
2 NOS 12AT7WC
2 Svetlana 12AX7
1 JJ 12AX7

He cleaned all the tube sockets and did other cleaning and tightening and adjusted the bias.

Parts total was about 125.00 and labor $75.00.

The amp definitely sounds a lot better. I'll be able to play a bit more later on this evening....
