New project: What if EVH never painted Franky red?

It's cool if you want to build a frankenstrat, but that looks damn nice. You clear it until it's smooth and wet sand buff until it's like glass. That body looks awesome.

I highly doubt that Eddie ever wet sanded unless he spilled his beer on the guitar and wiped it with a scrubbie

give it a week with that

It stays tacky forever.
It says, based on 70 degree temperatures, that it's dry in 48 hours. It's been significantly hotter than 70 degrees. It hit 94 while I was outside and has stayed around 70 degrees by the AC in the dining room (which doesn't quite get as cool in my office, where the body is currently hanging).

I made sure I laid it on just thin enough to conceal the wood. I actually had a couple spots towards the end where I could still see the color of the ash and I had to hit them with a real light spray. The body doesn't feel all that tacky right now. Dupli-Color is acrylic lacquer, too. This is definitely not some enamel crap. For some strange reason, though, AutoZone by me had this instead of Dupli-Color in black and white. idn_smilie

Besides the fact that I already have two black Strats I have seriously been dreaming about a B&W Franky for years.

I'm more likely to spill Dr Pepper, but same idea. LOL

I can't believe I never looked at this thread before. I love both guitars. I am particularly smitten with the 1985 with checkerboard, but both are cool. Makes me want to wear vans and play guitar.

My "Frankie"....

Rattle can finish on swamp ash body.... tele neck and bridge, Duncan Custom Shop in the bridge, Eric Johnson single in the neck, push pull volume selects either humbucker or both cream coils.

I played the EVH model at GC yesterday. The body felt nice and well balanced but the neck was super wide.

It's not absolutely 100% perfectly accurate but its probably about as close as I'm am capable. I have two modes when it comes to artistic stuff: get it 98% right or spend four months doing it over and over again, losing hair, and giving up when its 97% right.

I left the grain exposed on my Blue, Black and White one. I really dig the look.

Ed definitely did the same on his. No thick layers of paint. You'd see the separation between the layers as a ridge.

I'm going to try to get the white on the body tonight after work.

I think the ONLY thing I might not have is a white tone knob, but that's iffy. It might be buried in a box somewhere.

There is no way I could try to duplicate it. I would end up just striping it my own way because I would go mental if I got it 90% of the way there and had a stripe or 2 just out of place.

That's what I did with this about 15 years ago.

I went for as close as possible as I could get on all the ones that I have done. I tape by hand by just looking at the taping schemes that I have put together. There is always some little difference here and there. Only Ed's is Ed's and everything that I have ever made is simply in tribute to the guitar that helped change the world of rock guitar.

You can see some of my variance in taping below. I did have someone say to me, "You used the wrong reflectors...". My reaction was like "just like Ed I used what was readily and cheaply available at the time"

I just love making these things.

You know, the squiggle on the bass side of the pickguard... That was a PITA. I ended up taking my tape, putting on a clear piece of plastic (the wrapper from the pinstripe size tape), and tracing a 1:1 size printout of the real thing. I then cut around the line with my Swiss Army Knife, put the whole piece of tape on the body, and carefully peeled the execess off.

LOL

I'm wondering what wear spots I will cause on it myself.

Oddly enough, my other Franky doesn't have much friction wear at all. Just a few dings here and there. I did apply more coats of each color to that than I'm doing with this, though.

Considering that Ed probably just slapped down a piece of tape in that spot just so he could get it unstuck from his finger... You however had to make it work the hard way...

You need to play 300 gigs a year on it for 12 years to get that wear
