Need carry on luggage, duffel, or backpack. Recommendations?

I just bought a backpack on Amazon; it isn't a backpacker's model, and was bought as much for the looks as utility, but it will be good for my upcoming trip; I will be dressed up and this is somewhat dressy for a backpack. It will also be handy for school.

OK, for completeness, I thought I'd share what I finally went with:
We ended up packing 80% of our clothes (and my CPAP machine) in the duffel and spinner which was carry-on. We also took a big case which held the remainder of our clothes, extra shoes, toiletries and the like.
It turns out that for two legs of the trip out and back, we were on Embraer toy jets with sub-sized overhead bins. They made everyone "valet" check any sort of suitcase (like our 22" spinner), but my duffel fit *perfectly* in the overhead.
Also, the wife bought a nice fashiony backpack to take for beach use, but turns out it would not hold the stuff we wanted to take to the beach, so the duffel (zipped down to the smaller size) served double duty as beach accoutrement.
Lastly, for the return trip, where I didn't care if the checked bag got lost, I put all of the stuff from the duffel (and the duffel itself) into the checked bag.
The spinner was particularly handy because I could put my laptop case on top and wheel it through the miles of Miami airport between check in and gate.

- A 22" spinner for the wife. (Generic she bought at a Ross/TJMax/Whatever)
