My son’s Christmas present just arrived

He likes metal/hard rock stuff. He likes classic metal like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest...plus more modern stuff that is rather math-metal like Meshuggah. He likes Mastodon a lot as well, plus some of the more popular metal and rock the kids like, although he is more into the music of the modern stuff than the screaming lyrics. He also likes 70's and 80's rock stuff, and some of the 80's new wave stuff that has cool guitar parts but is more pop oriented. His main motivation seems to be "guitar is cool", so he seems to like lots of different things.

He picked up guitar very quickly and seems to have a knack for learning things by ear, and a good ear for making up his own riffs. He had scoliosis surgery this year which has kept him pretty much at home with limited mobility for months, plus the on and off again lockdowns for coronavirus, so he has managed to develop his guitar skills pretty fast. He has been using one of my guitars, but wants his own.

That's awesome!! That jackson will be a great riffstick for him.

Back mojo for your son. My oldest has some pretty bad scoliosis. So far no surgery, but they've said she may need it when she gets into her 20s.

Wow. It's really a shame when kids have to endure those kind of conditions and surgeries. Mojo to both your kids.

I unpacked it to make sure it arrived ok in shipping and it wasn’t a total dog. Anyway, this is what he wanted, so the finish is perhaps geared towards 15 year old kids. After seeing it in person I kind of like it.

That looks awesome! I've never seen a swirl paint job from Jackson. Is that from the factory or custom aftermarket work? Either way, I'm sure he's going to dig it. It's been a long time since I was 15, and I would. :thu:

It is a Jackson model factory finish. They have it in red/black swirl and black/white swirl.
 
Wow that is some significant spinal surgery Walter. Hope his recovery is going well.

15 year old me would have killed for that guitar. old man me approves as well. Did you get him a 50watt half stack to go with it?!
 
Surgery was about 9 hours or so. Of course, that included 10 days in the hospital to recover, and then the phase we are in now which is about 6 months of physical therapy. He is doing great and pretty much almost back to normal, although he still has to work on muscle strength and stuff. He literally `grew' about 3 inches from straightening out his back.

They must have been some of the longest 9 hours of your life. That's some pretty heroic hardware he's got in there. Strong, tough kid. So happy he bounced back from it so fast.

My bill was 6.5 Swiss Francs, which is about 7.25 USD. That wasn't even for my son, but for my wife who stayed in the hospital room with my son the entire time and forgot something and had to get a "toiletries" kit. Her food was free. According to the doctor who did the surgery it is was a very expensive computer/robot guided spine surgery that people from all over the world come to the Basel Children's hospital to get. He thought the total billable cost was somewhere in the 300,000 CHF range. Swiss insurance is expensive as there is no employer contribution, but it works really well and there are some great laws in place (like no deductibles for children, insurers can't dictate hospital recovery times, and the like).

A friend of mine had that surgery in high school; she had to wear a brace/girdle for four or five years before she had surgery... post surgery she 'grew' 3" and finally hit 5'0.
