Mike McCready from Pearl Jam... one of the top 100 guitarists of all time?

So I went out last weekend with a bunch of friends… a few of them are hardcore music lovers. I got into a discussion with one of the guys there about guitar players. He said, “Mike McCready is easily in the top 100 of guitarists ever!!!”. I asked him what he based this on… was it based on song writing ability? Riff-writer?Technicality? Playing for the song?... what was he basing his comment on?

He said, “just overall… he’s a monster”.

I haven’t listened to PJ since the 2nd album(maybe a few songs here and there), but I’ve never considered him anywhere near the top 1,000 of greatest players ever. From what I remember, all he does are pentatonic solos… nothing creative. Of course, I compare him to people like Richie Kotzen, Brian May, Nuno, Vai… players all great for different reasons.

I even put CC DeVille above McCready.

Discuss….

I agree with you completely. Of course, I don't like Pearl Jam, so I may be a little biased. But I don't consider him to be much above a pretty decent player.

McCready is a solid player and does the PJ thing really well. But just an average guitar player - but that is all he has to be. And no - CC is several notches below him....

He's way better than CC Deville, in both playing, hair, and tone.

Top 100? Probably not.

This as amended by me. and I love watching him live. He is a better player than I by a long shot, and entertains well at concerts.

How to say top 100 or not? I am not sure. I think McCready can play very fast, and plays with strong emotion. So those strike me as strengths. As far as relative skill or creativity, I would guess he does't match up with some others, but I don't tend to listen to those others nearly as much as I put on some Pearl Jam. so, what does that mean in terms of rankings? My point? Top 100 rankings are really meaningless.

God bless you, sir. This is an oasis of hilarity in an otherwise miserable day.
Sometimes the truth brings a hilarity all its own.

And as miserable as my December has already been I'm looking for all of the hilarity I can find.

Hey!

Quit baggin' on CC.

Can you even imagine how much suckier Poison would have been without him?

Do you even want to?

Didn't think so.

IIRC there is a part in Slash's biography where he is auditioning for Poison and as he's leaving he passes a guy with teased out hair in a one piece leotard (CC) and he immediately knows he isn't going to get the job.

It is interesting that this didn't come from some top 100 list; this is one guy's opinion. And, since he is a big fan, he would naturally feel this way. We can all disagree, but this is truth to him.

I'd probably have Jerry Garcia at the top of my list...:embarrassed:

It's an opinion. idn_smilie

Does your friend play? If not, it's probably not based on the same criteria that guitarists would use, and even then we can't agree on shit.

McCready is absolutely on my top 100 list. I would love to be able to play as well as him.
