Mark's Music School Diary.

Entering finals week. I took the hardest part of my musicianship final thursday and got an 84% which is really good for me on the dictation. I usually do poorly on that part and then get an A on the singing portion. My grade has been hovering at 88% because of that. I'm hoping that between the higher dictation grade and what should be a good grade on the singing and sightsinging portion next thursday (and transcription homework that hasn't been added in yet) that I can squeak an A out of it. This is the only class where this is a question.

Here is my study guide for music history:

I love how 4'33" is on my listening list :embarrassed:

Monday I have no school. Tuesday is my Music Theory final and my guitar jury. Wednesday is my Jazz Harmony and Analysis final, Thursday is my Musicianship singing final and Friday is my Music History final.

That's a pretty cool listening list.

My wife and I saw the original production of Doctor Atomic when it premiered in Chicago, which was 10 times better than when he Met did it. Either way... Gerald Finley owns that aria. Awesome.

It's been a great class and I love the teacher. It's nice that not only is she a fantastic teacher but she also sings in the LA master Chorale and has premiered or worked with many of the contemporary composers that we've been discussing this month.

It's been eye opening listening to all of the post romantic and later music. Suddenly I know where all of the film composers steal from. We're going to see this tonight and I'm actually excited to hear this stuff live. My son is going to love it https://www.facebook.com/events/697057620480917??ti=ia

Thanks guys!

I played the first chorus of Pat Martino's solo on "Just friends" as my prepared piece. I transcribed it and then memorized it. This is what I handed out to the panel:

Then they had me play "Stella by Starlight" with Bill Cunliffe, Paul Kriebech and Luther Hughes backing me up. They asked if I had a student band and I mentioned that I wanted to play with the faculty and one of them chuckled and said that I was pretty smart. The student bands usually end up fucking up and reflecting poorly on the student who's jury it is. Then I was asked to play an up bebop blues in F. They didn't bother asking me to sight read or for any of the scales specified in the jury requirements:

TO ENTER THE 393 LEVEL:

393 level on the instrument and be able to improvise on tunes with secondary dominant relationships, borrowed chords and modulations. (see sample list below).

• Major, Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor and Jazz Melodic Minor in broken 3rds and diatonic triads.

• All modes of Major Scale, Bebop-Dominant, and Diminished scales.

• Diminished & Augmented triads, Major, dominant and minor ninth chords.

Be able to sight read more complex meters (including 5/4, 7/4, 5/8) in any key with moderately complex syncopations

• 5 Tunes from the attached list for the second semester and etude/transcriptions (as above)

I got a little nervous about halfway through my prepared solo but then I was fine which was a big improvement over last semesters jury. One of the department administrators questioned if I was advancing too quick and if it were too early for me to make another level jump in such a short time and my private teacher piped up with "we're trying to get him through this before his wife leaves him". I waited out in the hallway for them to deliberate and then my teacher came out with the form and the panels critique. Essentially they want me to play better. Me too  They did have some nice stuff written down so I feel pretty good about the day. If I wasn't awarded my level change it would have fucked up my timeline pretty hard.

Congrats, man...you've been working hard, you earned it...well done...
Thanks :)

I have three more finals (Jazz Harmony and Analysis, Musicianship and Music History) but they are not anything to stress over other than just making sure I'm prepared. My Diatonic Harmony final was easy this morning.
