Let's talk black pepper

I need to get a new one. We tend to go through them pretty quickly. Deepfriers too. Seems like a yearly thing.

We have a store in our area, and it's a magical experience shopping here. All the scents are amazing. We make at least one trip every year. And yes, there's an enormous difference between ground pepper that's been sitting in a shaker for eons and freshly ground.

I bought a deep fryer that filters its own oil into a storage receptacle. It works surprisingly well, with the not insignificant exception that the usable cooking depth of the oil reservoir is about 3/4", so you can't use it for anything but french fries.

LOL, yeah that's not going to work out well for us.

I use a shitload of pepper. I usually unscrew the lid and pour it on directly if I'm at a restaurant and embarrass my Wife.
I like fresh ground pepper best, but in the shakers at home I keep the Black Malabar ground pepper from Costco.

My wife surprised me with one of those disposable peppercorn/grinder combo things she picked up at the supermarket. Used it this morning on my bacon and eggs - fantastic! Definitely getting a refillable one in the near future.

I will put pepper on most things I eat. I used to not like steak until I had peppered steak one time at a restaurant. They covered the steak with pepper that was a large grind size. It was excellent and that is how I eat steak now.

I will use black pepper for some things but I prefer ground red pepper. A lot of it. I do not like much comfort food and I find the red pepper gives it the level of pique I require. I use it on Italian food too. I do not use it on mexican food unless it is called for. Mexican food should be peppered with a mix of fresh, diced (small) jalepenos and cilantro. One can add diced onion to the mix if one desires.

I will use a mix of black and red pepper to spice up Thanksgiving dinner food as I find it terribly boring if I do not pepper it. Pepper is the only thing that makes Thanksgiving dinner palatable.

Steak au poivre. It's delicious. Our restaurant occasionally runs it as a special with a green peppercorn sauce.

My grandmother would put pepper on her cantaloupe and honeydew melon.

The older I get, the more I use and enjoy black pepper. I doubt I'll ever use it on fruit, however.

I dig rainbow peppercorns too. They're excellent on grilled salmon--almost a little pine flavor.
