I have many memories of my father "fixing" the TV, which usually ended with a call to the repairman. One memorable day he was using a flashlight as he poked around the back of the TV. In drunken frustration he loudly announced, "My ass gives off more light that this gotdamn flashlight." It became a family favorite laugh getter when he wasn't around.
Same. We'd pull all the tubes and go to the neighborhood drug store that had a tube tester. Replace the ones that failed and got the TV back online. It eventually died and was replaced with a modern "Solid State" TV. Good times.

My father was always "fixing" things in ways that doubled repair costs once the repairman was finally called.
I had some of that too. I remember Dad once "fixed" a leak under the sink using plumbers putty. When the plumber showed up a few weeks later to really fix it, he spent some time chastising the previous "plumber" that did that work.
