Newsflash! KILL WHITEY!!! (Bulger)

They tried to cut his tongue out.

of course they did. I'm surprised they didn't tear his ears, nose, and hands off like chimps do. And then jump up and down howling and slapping their heads.

Definition of politics: anything I don't agree with

Painting with pretty wide brush there. When the conversation turns to labeling all inmates as "animals", and advocates the kind of treatment forbidden by the Constitution or Bill of Rights, or becomes a debate over the efficacy of rehabilitation... it becomes political.

It's a simple news story about a VERY bad guy meeting a very violent end. It's "newsworthy" because for better or worse, Bulger was a household name and the subject of books and movies. An historical figure regardless of "why".

It's not about what I like or don't.

It's about taking the thread in a direction that fodder for the type of conversation and arguments that are divisive and best avoided.

Whitey had a direct impact on a lot of people around Boston.

Places you could/couldn't go; clubs that mysteriously died; etc.s

When organized crime can perform hits in prisons there's a huge problem. I was kidding about the experimentation, but you can't have so much freedom that gangs run the prison. Alcatraz code of silence wasn't a bad idea. Give them unlimited access to books. They can read in their cell all day and get some access to exercise. I'm mostly talking about maximum security. Even the guys you're talking about that aren't animals have to keep silent about rapes or else they will be targeted for violence.

Wait, what? Rapists aren't violent? Rapists aren't animals?

Yes and all they're talking about on the news today is how this could take place in the first place. My original point. Kind of a common reaction. Calling murderers animals is political?

You posted a thread about a murder, what are we supposed to say? Cool?

Yes, it's political. Removing someone's status as a human - regardless of how they have failed others - says much more about who is doing the removing than it does about the removee.

Well good thing you guys curbed this because it was really going to happen based on my online forum comments. But let's keep prisons dangerous and out of control. By the way, inmates lose constitutional rights like being able to vote.

Don't worry - we'll keep letting you make silly straw man arguments and believe in them!

After all, the holidays are almost upon us.

Yes it's obvious I believe everything I say online and apparent I'm always serious. Kudos, you're a keen observer.

Do you seriously believe that rapists aren't violent? Seriously, they're not animals?

It’s a little bit disingenuous to pick on @rickenvox here when there have been countless instances on this forum where people have responded to arrests and convictions with sentiments along the lines of “I hope this POS spends decades getting gang-raped.”

I’m a big believer in the purpose of imprisonment isn’t punishment, but is twofold: to protect people and to rehabilitate.

The former should absolutely apply not only the general populace, but to inmates themselves. Nobody should ever have to worry about getting shanked or beaten by their peers. And if a person is likely to commit a violent crime while in prison, then they should absolutely be confined to solitary confinement.

Flipside, there have been plenty of instances in other parts of the world where when non-violent criminals are allowed more space, more freedom, more civility, more opportunity, etc., then the rates of post-incarceration recidivism drop drastically.

Not to say that I don’t believe in life imprisonment, but I do believe that it isn’t antithetical to rehabilitation. I believe that a good civilization is one that provides every criminal with honest chances to self-improve and to dig their way out of their own personal hell, whether it be literal or metaphorical, and regardless of whether that opportunity is deserved or whether it is ever taken advantage of.

I was talking about rape victims in prison. Yes there are people in prison for archaic drugs laws, marijuana dealers. They're probably not all animals.

Wow I'm getting attacked from all sides from people who can't read carefully. There's probably no fallout if I don't defend myself and just let you guys draw whatever conclusions you want.

If someone put me in a room all day with books and the bills still got paid and I could eat, I'd be a happy camper.

Learn how to read peoples.

Just assuming you can read: if I have a problem with a murderer being murdered in prison, then I have a problem with prison rapes. It's the whole theme I'm talking about. How did this point of mine get confused? Are you guys on drugs or something? WTF!?

I get it though, the same people who often want prison justice would have problems with prisoners being forced to read books and use a treadmill. Oh the humanity!

To be fair, I didn't "pick on" anyone. I simply asked that the thread not go exactly how it has since I asked. I responded to him only after that request.

I'll say it again, it's a news story about a newsworthy person being murdered. It is not an opinion poll for discussing hot button issues regarding criminals and incarceration or whether or not convicted offenders warrant humane treatment. As the thread originator, I didn't ask any such questions, nor am I interested in debating them here.

If I hadn't posted the news, someone else would have. I did it in a light hearted way in keeping with general status quo and using an overtly obvious movie reference. Was that dickish? Maybe.

I'm only responsible for the OP, not the dangerous tributaries that others chose to paddle down. I didn't want to see it turn into an ugly shitstorm. Fuck me right?

If that's the case every thread should end with the original post. Subject over. We actually all have access to online news so maybe we don't need the forum, unless of course we just want to force people to read what we're reading and then don't want them to comment on thoughts that would naturally come to their head. Or maybe every comment should be it's own thread. I'm sure we can find some kind of solution to your issue.

I didn’t single you out at all. Not for your OP, nor for any of your subsequent posts. Not by name, nor by inference.

I will say, though, that being the OP never entitles anyone to be able to direct or confine conversation that is fair, polite, honest, and somewhat on-topic. That’s how this group has functioned for years now.
