They tried to cut his tongue out.
Painting with pretty wide brush there. When the conversation turns to labeling all inmates as "animals", and advocates the kind of treatment forbidden by the Constitution or Bill of Rights, or becomes a debate over the efficacy of rehabilitation... it becomes political.Definition of politics: anything I don't agree with

When organized crime can perform hits in prisons there's a huge problem. I was kidding about the experimentation, but you can't have so much freedom that gangs run the prison. Alcatraz code of silence wasn't a bad idea. Give them unlimited access to books. They can read in their cell all day and get some access to exercise. I'm mostly talking about maximum security. Even the guys you're talking about that aren't animals have to keep silent about rapes or else they will be targeted for violence.
Wait, what? Rapists aren't violent? Rapists aren't animals?

It's a simple news story about a VERY bad guy meeting a very violent end. It's "newsworthy" because for better or worse, Bulger was a household name and the subject of books and movies. An historical figure regardless of "why".
It's not about what I like or don't.
It's about taking the thread in a direction that fodder for the type of conversation and arguments that are divisive and best avoided.
Yes, it's political. Removing someone's status as a human - regardless of how they have failed others - says much more about who is doing the removing than it does about the removee.
Don't worry - we'll keep letting you make silly straw man arguments and believe in them!
After all, the holidays are almost upon us.

Do you seriously believe that rapists aren't violent? Seriously, they're not animals?
It’s a little bit disingenuous to pick on @rickenvox here when there have been countless instances on this forum where people have responded to arrests and convictions with sentiments along the lines of “I hope this POS spends decades getting gang-raped.”
I’m a big believer in the purpose of imprisonment isn’t punishment, but is twofold: to protect people and to rehabilitate.
The former should absolutely apply not only the general populace, but to inmates themselves. Nobody should ever have to worry about getting shanked or beaten by their peers. And if a person is likely to commit a violent crime while in prison, then they should absolutely be confined to solitary confinement.
Flipside, there have been plenty of instances in other parts of the world where when non-violent criminals are allowed more space, more freedom, more civility, more opportunity, etc., then the rates of post-incarceration recidivism drop drastically.
Not to say that I don’t believe in life imprisonment, but I do believe that it isn’t antithetical to rehabilitation. I believe that a good civilization is one that provides every criminal with honest chances to self-improve and to dig their way out of their own personal hell, whether it be literal or metaphorical, and regardless of whether that opportunity is deserved or whether it is ever taken advantage of.
To be fair, I didn't "pick on" anyone. I simply asked that the thread not go exactly how it has since I asked. I responded to him only after that request. It’s a little bit disingenuous to pick on @rickenvox here when there have been countless instances on this forum where people have responded to arrests and convictions with sentiments along the lines of “I hope this POS spends decades getting gang-raped.”

I'll say it again, it's a news story about a newsworthy person being murdered. It is not an opinion poll for discussing hot button issues regarding criminals and incarceration or whether or not convicted offenders warrant humane treatment. As the thread originator, I didn't ask any such questions, nor am I interested in debating them here.
If I hadn't posted the news, someone else would have. I did it in a light hearted way in keeping with general status quo and using an overtly obvious movie reference. Was that dickish? Maybe.
I'm only responsible for the OP, not the dangerous tributaries that others chose to paddle down. I didn't want to see it turn into an ugly shitstorm. Fuck me right?

Wow I'm getting attacked from all sides from people who can't read carefully.
Easy there, Donald.
