Just got back from voting

How very true. I think that goes to the reason why our government has been grid locked for so long as well. Perhaps if we as a nation could become as rational as we here are as a forum we'd stop blaming each other and take a real look at our problems and their causes. There is no doubt in my mind that those in control are pleased as punch at having us split down the middle with each side believing that the other is evil while forgetting to keep an eye on them.

Fear sells. Fear elects.
You sometimes have to create a bad guy to show how you will defeat evil/crime/sour lemonade, etc., while creating jobs/cutting taxes/preserving ____. We always see inflated and distorted mud slinging about the opposition, which insults the voter's intelligence.
We also see the ad's about how "my opponent is soft on crime" and will release pirates, thugs and evil doers out of prison to rape our daughters and perhaps a turtle or two.

Finger pointing by elected officials as well as the average citizen has yet to solve any issue, yet it occupies a majority of politics. The only way to improve the world is through unity. If the human race manages to not wipe everything out, we may get close to such a lofty goal in another few hundred years or so. Well, I can always imagine...

unfortunately, Tig....i guess i'm from the "glass half empty" side.

my take is....that as long as there are two humans on this earth and they are aware of each other, one will try to TAKE what the other has. bottom line is GREED.

I
As a side note, I'm a little surprised this thread hasn't been locked down yet, with the anti-politics policy Mark has in place. Thanks Mark, for letting us discuss this in a reasonably dignified fashion so far. Nobody has made this a "us vs. them" thread yet, so maybe that's why he's allowing it.
Yep. It has seemed to be relatively polite and no one has complained so I'm good with it.

Actually I think it takes at least three. I can't remember where I heard it but there's an old saying that goes something like, "If there were only one person on Earth things would be fine. If there were only two people on Earth they would know that neither has an advantage and would find a way to compromise. However, once there are three people on Earth the other two will split into opposing factions, run for office and lobby for his vote."

We need far more than to replace the Electoral College with a popular vote. There has been much talk about how the current system is destroying our Democracy but the fact is that we have never been a true Democracy. What we are and always have been is a Plutocratic Oligarchy in that we don't vote directly on issues but rather elect others to do that for us who inevitably come under the control of the wealthy minority. How do we fix that? Well, I've thought long and hard about it and have come to the conclusion that since we built it into the system from day one and the Oligarch's make and enforce the rules then we are basically totally fucked and can't do anything about it.

True democracy = overrated

As Howie likes to say, people are stupid.

oh....absolutely.....a TRUE democracy is the most dangerous thing....worse maybe than a dictatorship.
this recent ebola thing is a really good example.....get a bunch of stupid people afraid of what they know nothing about and you would end up with whole towns being quarantined or worse.

there definitely needs to be a layer between the voters and the end result, but then you have the element of $$/power that will control that layer.

kobiashi maru....i guess.

Unfortunately I think that's true, especially given the condition of our educational system over the last three or so generations. But, why in Gods name do they all have to be lawyers? I mean we've had a few wrestlers and movie stars maybe it's time to give the musicians a shot. We seem to be doing pretty well here.

Good thought. Instead of a President, we elect a Concertmaster. :)

well....that's cuz we haven't brought up the subject of floggers and shredders:grin:

or a symphony of the senatorial sousaphones.

at least then it would sound exactly like it does now......lots of loud farts.

Not to get too political. But we had Jessie The Body as the Governator. It wasn't just the 18 year olds that voted for him. My Grandfather voted for him too. He said it's time to shake the bag. People laugh at MN for it but he did do some very very good things. Not all was good but it was refreshing. Like he based his campaign on-I don't owe anybody anything so I don't have favors to repay.

Ventura showed his character in the lawsuit against now deceased SEAL Chris Kyle by continuing the case against his wife and the estate. Years ago in a bar Ventura was talking shit about the troops in Afghanistan or something and Kyle told him he was full of it and should STFU. It got physical and Kyle punched and dropped him. He mentioned the incident in a radio interview and Ventura sued him for 1 point something million.

The thing is, SEAL's are a tight brotherhood and can usually agree to disagree even after a fight. They always have each other's back. Ventura has never shown any team loyalty or brotherhood, which makes him a pariah in the frogman community. His mouth and actions sure haven't helped.
