Judging predictions from the past

IIRC I had Ben Gibbard in the George Harrison slot and Conor Oberst in the Bob Dylan slot.

I didn't quite choose slots, but chose people who might be likely to join together. Maybe some hot shot music tycoon will put this together like Peter, Paul, and Mary were manufactured. (Though that did work out.)

Aren’t you just talking about Boygenius?

Anyway, if we were going to to really do this and reimagine the same general idea but for today…you’d be looking for folks in their 40s with varying levels of fame/current relevance.

Here’s my go…

Jack White is a good pick for fill the Dylan slot. And he seems like he’d contribute the weirdness and bring some critical darling cred as he’s not who you’d expect to do this. If you can’t get him, I suppose you could draft Connor Oberst or Isaac Brock or whatshisnuts from the Shins. These are all less good options. I’d also accept Julian Casablancas of the Strokes but that would probably jack up the whole dynamic.

I like Jenny Lewis for the George Harrison role…not that Rilo Kiley was ever Beatle-sized, but she’s an affable presence whom everyone likes and who can turn out a good song and charismatic performance.

St. Vincent for Jeff Lynne. All-rounder in terms of talent/skillset. Can craft a distinct sonic world.

For the slightly older member of the group with gravitas and a big voice — Neko Case.

I like Olivia Rodrigo for the younger Tom Petty slot. She’s publicly friendly with White and Annie Clarke. She is kind of a retro-minded popstar who isn’t afraid to raid the classic tunes of yesteryear for a hit.

I feel this is an appropriate level of dudes and ego. A group just super enough.

It seems to me that it should be boygenius with Neko Case and St. Vincent. That would be an all queer lineup. I'm totally fine with that.

it should just be five Kid Rocks

Boygenuis is the correct answer. In a cautionary sense, none of the posts from ten years ago predicted this, and in a Panglossian sense the reality of boygenius is better than any of the historical predictions would have become. We live in the best of all possible worlds, and the only sure prediction is that anyone who asserts that they can predict the future is a charlatan.
