Interesting Thread on TGP - DIY pedal builders perspective on boutique pedals

It just goes to what you pointed out in the other thread about building your own pedals. What would be interesting though is if someone brings a company like Strymon in - expensive with no crazy artwork. On the other side Zvex seems to have lots of art.

most of what Strymon does is digital. i wouldn't expect my Subdecay Quasar DLX or Eventide Pitchfactor to sell for $100, and neither should anybody expect Strymon to be. i wouldn't expect anybody to clone those pedals either. it's just not worth it.

Yes!

That would leave the conversation to the builds that the build your own "clone" (not limited byoc but all in general) so called boutiques builders and their minions cover.

Hey guys, I built a kit in my garage. It was easy. I'm gonna start a business building pedals now. Wait, what's payroll mean? I need insurance? Permits? Taxes? Utilities? Trademarks? Lawyers? Accountants? Advertising? Trade shows?
Nah. Fuck it. Cost of materials is all that matters.

Yeah it seems like there are a lot of meatheads at TGP.

Maybe my phaser would have been a better signature pedal for over there then.

I'm one of those that say it wouldn't be worth it for less than 150 shipped though. Wouldn't want any orders. My ego is not that huge.

The money i would be able to make as profit would be able to be made in less time by taking an extra shift at work.

Due to my location shipping alone to someone stateside would be about 30-40 bucks.

Even though I toyed with the idea of making a couple if folks were interested. I just couldn't do it.

That's the way I am with my biltong (South African style beef jerky.) It's great, and people always say they want to buy some. But it's not high margin enough to make it worth all the bullshit. I'll just keep making enough for myself and my wife.

As far as the "doodles" go who gives a shit? First of all that's what they look like=doodles that some 8 year old put on there and as far as pedals go my concern is how well they work. It's not like your guitar that you're holding up for the world to see. I would prefer a lower price than some silly design on my pedals but I'm a poor boy from Oklahoma.

Yeah, but a lot of these pedal fetishists are really hung up on what their pedal boards look like. God bless guitar and effects forums. :embarrassed:

Do you buy your car that way too?

So true!
