WTF: Indoor/Outdoor Cats

then they have no business being a domesticated 'pet"...plain and simple. let them go live in the wild and let nature take it's course...including the 12 year old with a new pellet gun and a bad attitude. or let ferrel dogs run free because for some of them being in a backyard or kennel is a bad fate too.
Cats have been kept as pets or had a relationship with humans for centuries but not quite as long as dogs yet for some reason there is a double standard...
If you can’t see how cats and dogs are different then there is no point in arguing the finer points.

I know there are obvious differences. Never owned a cat but had friends who had them They are however both domesticated PETS and have been for centuries. For some reason though double standards apply. people also have rabbits and pigs domesticated yet in America the ONLY domesticated pet allowed to roam free is the cat....except on Indian reservations you see ferel dogs and in other countries you see ferel dogs, pet chickens, pigs, etc...Onmly in America do we discriminate.
On a completely different point I do not see the attraction to having a pet that basically only comes "home" for the free meal. I mean indoor cats or or cats on leashes jump in your lap, rub against you , play with toys, etc and perhaps a roaming cat does as well but for how long....I mean If I had a ferel dog coming to me everyday for a meal I would grow attached to it and want to bond withg it and to protect it. I would not want to drive to work one morning and see it splattered on the side of the road.

i guess I have to. Dogs attack people and each other.

The second part because you said you never had a cat. The fact that a cat goes outside has nothing to do with how personable or loving they can be or how the interact any other being. They really are magnificent creatures. You should try one.

i’m just trying to push the philosophy that I put up with a lot of animals and people trespassing on my brain in general. Birds and squirrels and raccoons and deer all help themselves to parts my yard. As long as they aren’t tearing up my attic or breaking things too bad they’re welcome to stay. Even the teenagers smoking a joint in the creek behind the house. My cat is part of the ecology in my area. Sure he has killed. He kills the mice that get in the garage and under the front porch. He keeps moles away and rabbits from the neighbor’s veg garden.

my dog eats prescription food and a good supply of table scraps. He keeps some of the other invaders away. He always lets me know when people are along the path or creek behind the house and in return I let him tear up my yard, give him plenty of walks and fetch and in return we pick up his turds and fix his medical problems.

both have their roles. Both deserve to be here. Incredibly both are just as capable of deep emotional connection with humans. It’s a miracle of nature. Let’s celebrate our differences. Peace and love (repeating)

I have personally been attacked by a cat while walking in an apartment complex, it drew blood on my leg and it tried clawing my dog.
I had for years a neighboring cat daily come over and shit in my yard. It also got cornered in my yard by my previous dog who pinned in down and the cat dug it’s claws into my dogs underside just hanging on it’s belly digging in and would not let go even as I was yelling at it. I had no choice but to kick it and I laid into it like kicking a fetid goal from the 50.

Dogs- If the customer has a dog, you know right away they have a dog. They are right there when you get there. Cats- most of the time they hide, so I don't see them and I don't say to the customer, I can't immediately close the door when I carry the 12 foot wide roll of carpet into your house. Does your dog get out?

Did a job once, lady walked back into the living room just as I was dropping the roll onto the floor. She saw the front door open went insane. Ran outside, calling over and over, Peaches, peaches, Peaches. Tears were running down her face, I tried to help look for the cat. I tried to console her, it will probably come back. At one point she mentioned that it was declawed and wouldn't be able to defend itself from the neighborhood Toms. Guess she was imagining a gang rape scenario. Wasted over an hour. Where was the cat this whole time? Under one of the beds. It's a fucking cat. That's what they do when somebody comes to their house. They hide.

Never really bothered me apart from one big fat ginger thing that decided it liked to sit on the cover of my hot tub to enjoy the radiant heat.

A mate of mine runs a local FB group with 20 odd k members.

Every 3rd post is either:

- My cat hasn't come home
- We've seen this cat looking scared, it's no tag on it
- There's a cat that keeps coming to my door, we feed it and stuff but we'd really like to know who the owners are

You should try to understand how keeping some cats inside would be a fate worse than being shot by a psycho or carried off by a barn owl.

sounds like some cats should live on a farm or some place more suitable than an urban area if they need their freeburty that badly

Cats should be leashed when outside of home property. they should not be allowed to roam free. I also don't understand why if you love your cat that you would let it roam. There are cars, wild animals, mean kids, psycho people and dickish birds and grumpy alley cats. If I had a cat I would keep it indoors or on a leash outside...

You can always tell the forumites who have never tried to walk a cat on a leash.

Game camera set up in your yard makes it less of a pain.

And another idea is to dig a small hole in the ground around 6" deep and maybe 18x18. Pour some dry kitty litter in it and slightly mix it in with the dirt, leaving most of the litter exposed. The cats cant resist it, and will shit in the hole. Fill it in after a week, and dig another one closer to your property line. Repeat until it is on the other side of your property line. Done deal, you trained a cat.

Me, I just spray them with 10/90 Patchouli and water in a good sprayer. I have a few old water fire extinguishers for this purpose. They shoot a good solid stream about 50 feet. Spray the fuckers with it. They may come back, but at least you know you will be pissing off their owners. My wife calls it 'Hippie Mace'
There's a huge flaw here. If I had a cat that smelled like patchouli I would be happy. Patchouli smells great. Not everyone hates it.

You should be my neighbor! I agree, at least to a point. It can get a bit much sometimes, you know

True story- my wife and her friend were busted in the parking lot of a dead show in SF back in the 80's, and on the way to jail they managed to open a bottle of patchouli and dump it in the back of the squad car. The cop locked up the brakes, pulled to the side and kicked them out of the car. He was pissed, saying " Shit, now my wife is going to think I have been fucking hippies". Left them on the side of the freeway.:bigg:

I will be the first to admit I have never walked a cat on a leash but I have seen many who do. old man across the street where I grew up always kept his cat on a leash and when he went for walks the cat sat on his shoulder(with the leashes)...a one man muffler shop we used for years ,,,the owner always had his cat there and always on a leash

Our cats stay indoors and are spayed/neutered. A few will sit out on the back porch or yard for a few minutes without wandering off.

For the most part, the dogs and cats get along rather well.

Maybe my observation is out of whack, but I think more folks keep their cats permanently indoors more now than they did 30-40 years ago. Back then, they were in and out, or outside all the time. Changing times and people’s considerations for local laws, neighbors (and their pets) have had their influence.
I believe if you’re going to own a cat, it should either be full-time indoors or out. My experiences with in/out cats included fleas in the house and larger critters a cat would bring in, including a rabbit. If you live out in the sticks like I do, your cat won’t likely piss off the neighbors, but it’s chances of living beyond a few years are pretty low with cars, coyotes, owls and dogs that their owners allow to roam. After a while you get tired of losing them, never to return or worse, burying them.
We have 4, all strays. Only one fully domesticated itself, the others run and hide and won’t let anyone near them except for me and my wife. Funny, the one that’s practically afraid of it’s shadow uses the toilet. We didn’t train her.
