In lieu of a Recording Forum: If you were building a Recording Studio from Scratch.... Must Haves??

Also, I'd have a 500 series rack and some preamps and whatnot: https://www.sweetwater.com/c1040--500_Series_Chassis

I've looked at those, and they look super useful, especially if you move your recording around and need something compact....

... but talk about option anxiety and crazy bells and whistles for some of those 500 modules.... I can't even imagine what kind of cork sniffery goes on in those groups. :o

I don't do that much sound recording these days, mostly on location live(stream) stuff in combination with video, so my setup is more geared towards portability and flexibility rather than the "perfect" studio setup. Post production is not that important to me most of the time and I need to be able to control both sound and video (both from cameras and live generated visuals) easily.

Computer: MSI GS65 (for several reasons I've ditched Apple almost 2 years ago after decades of being Mac only, no regrets at all). Biggest requirement was portable GPU and CPU power, as it needs to be able to run live generated visuals and stream at the same time.
Audio Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (portability is more important than separate channel ins)
Mixer: Used to be a Mackie ProFX12, now a Mackie 802VLZ4, main outs go to the Focusrite, depending on the situation CR or Aux goes to whatever's needed.
Video: Blackmagic ATEM Mini with whatever devices are needed going into it.

Then the result usually goes into OBS and from there wherever it needs to go. In my studio I have the monitor outs of the Focusrite hooked up to some random old Yamaha mixer that has 2 Genelecs and a sub for speakers.

It's not going to cut it for a proper studio setup, but I can pack the whole bunch up quite easily and do on location work. I'd say something like this would be good for anyone who doesn't have a permanent studio, but still wants to be able to record and/or stream.

You can do a lot with a laptop and an internet connection. Some instruments and microphones are nice to have.

What I usually need is more skill.

Hey, what are some decent basic wired over ear headphones for recording and possibly online jamming such as jamulus? (Which has basically the same needs as recording).

Any decent closed-back headphones will do...the Sony MDR7506, Sennheiser HD280 are both around 100.00, or the AudioTechica ATM50h are 150.00...those 3 are probably your best bets...
