If You’re In the Market for a Gibson

Let’s Get Obtuse!
So, I’ve been guitar shopping for a bit and I’ve still not bought anything because I’m perverse. I have, however, played every guitar in existence in the last 5 months.

Some guitars are very nice. Some are pretty meh. This is one of the few that stuck out to me as being exceptional. It’s not exactly what I’m looking for and very expensive and made by the big evil G in the center of the Masonic logo who shall not get money from me if I can avoid it It sounds super rad and has a big fat neck. And the pickups in it are delicious.

If this sort of thing is your jam, I vouch for this big silly thing. Bring your checkbook. This is the best Gibson custom shop thing I’ve touched. At that price point you’d think awesome a given, but alas. I’ve played more than one Gibson CS ES-335s that made me puke a little.

That looks very cool. If I were getting an Explorer I'd probably go korina, natural finish, but that pelham blue with the binding/inlay is smoking hot.
 
Meh, that top color reminds me of 1960s Formica. I don’t think that this is going to be one of those guitars that looks cooler as the gold finish wears off.
 
Not for me. I had an Epi Korina. The shape got on my nerves after a while. Too many impractical and annoying things about it that made the looks cool factor not worth it.
 
I had an Explorer many years ago. I found it's surprisingly comfortable to sit with, and if you took the Jeff Healey route there's your coffee table.

I like the sound of that. I dig leaning into the fifties Googie, Populuxe aspect of an Explorer. I'd like an Explorer that twangs and surfs, and Pelham Blue is one of my favorite finishes.
 
OK, if that's the one that was actually on the floor at CME when I was there last month, that thing is SIIIIIICK!

It’s blue in person, but a bit darkened/muted — I assume with $2k worth of Murphy Lab witchcraft goop.

It’s a case of a guitar that doesn’t necessarily look like what everyone would want, but it plays and sounds great.
 
Peen, just find a good used recent year SG Stnd.
My 2021's workmanship is flawless and I got it for $1200.
Its lighter than my Teles, has a nice beefy neck, and theres nothing at all wrong with the 490 pups.
Does country to hard rock with aplomb.
IMO it's the practical Gibson to own.
 
That hotshot English fella who works for CME needs to get it on the camera and give it a good workout.

I have owned several SGs in my day. I’m a fan, but don’t get on with them. Everything is shifted to the left in a way that I don’t love. That’s my gripe with Firebirds as well.

I’m not in the market for a Gibson but am really down to deciding between something silly and something very silly. Both kind of retro and extra, but just different approaches to that sort of thing.

Im the same with Firebirds, but SGs ain't as extreme and it doesn't bother me.
I thought you were seriously looking at something by the "Evil Big G", my bad.
Theres always Gretsch. The more bling the more silly. I love my W Falcon but am always kinda embarrassed to play it in public, lol.
Billy-Bo perhaps? Double Cut Sparkle Jet in Mystix Purple? :bigg:
