I think the unthinkable has happened but, I want to be 100% sure

Did the Mamas and the Papas ever cover the Unicorn song?

It started with me trying to remember if it was Ray Raynor or, Garfield Goose where there was sometimes a segment where somebody fro Lincoln Park Zoo brought an animal. They always played the Unicorn song when they introduced him.

The song is about Noah rounding up the animals, failing to find a Unicorn and that's why there are no unicorn now. I sang a little of it to wife.

There were green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees

She says, I don't remember which show it was but, I remember that song, the Mamas and the Papas sang it.

Me- I don't think so, I remember a heavy Irish accent.

I head to Google. The band was The Irish Rovers. That would explain the Irish accent I remember. That was simple. A little too simple. What if the Mamas and the Papas covered it? I dive deeper. I learned- Dr. Lester E. Fisher was the director of the Lincoln park Zoo and he was the somebody from Lincoln Park Zoo. It was the Ray Raynor show. Shell Silverstein wrote the song. Many remember him from children's books he wrote. Many people remember him from the Playboy cartoons he did. What blew my mind the most was he also wrote A Boy Named Sue. Peter Paul and Marry had a unicorn song but, it's a completely different song. I still haven't found anything linking the Mamas and the Papas. I want to celebrate being right one time in 36 years but, I'm hesitant.

The magic 8-ball says, “No”.

  • "The Unicorn" was written by Shel Silverstein in 1962 and originally appeared on his album Inside Folk Songs (Atlantic Records).
  • The hit version came from The Irish Rovers in 1968—this is the definitive recording most people know.
  • There's no known studio or official version by The Mamas & the Papas anywhere in their discography.

Thanks.

Could it be that you're getting The Mamas and The Papas mixed up with Peter, Paul & Mary? According to the interwebz, they covered it on the Reunion album in '78, but I cannot find any other proof online.
  • Song: "The Unicorn" by Shel Silverstein
  • Recorded by: Peter, Paul and Mary
  • Album: Reunion (1978)
But they also had another The Unicorn, which was an original.
