I’m collecting original animation cels from the cartoon Doug, yes it’s true!

Cool. Never saw Doug, but that sort of thing makes an interesting display in the house. Different from the usual family photos, velvet Elvises, led Zep posters, etc.

I never know whether to take a smurfco post as serious or not... but those are pretty decent cel set-ups.

I collect animation cels myself -- probably have at least a thousand of the damn things. (Also sketches, hand-painted backgrounds, storyboards, etc.) Never collected "Doug" though. Wasn't even aware it was traditional cel-based animation -- guess I thought it was later than that.

They’re not worth much but I liked the show. They come unframed and I usually just find a frame at the Goodwill that fits.

Also - would love to hear more about your collection. Prized pieces? How did you start?

If you're hanging them up on the wall, be sure to pick a spot that doesn't get too much sun, and absolutely no direct sunlight ever. Most "modern" cels have photocopied lines (the animator draws the outlines on paper, which is then photocopied onto acetate, and painted by hand.) The outlines will disappear if you expose them to too much light. (You can, if you're careful and precise, draw them back in with a sharpie. But do that on a separate cel layer.)

I primarily collect old school anime, with smatterings of American stuff. Not sure if any of the titles would mean anything to anyone here, although I do have some Cartoon Network staples like Cowboy Bebop and Inuyasha. Got started on this in college when I saw a cel for sale at a sci-fi convention, and I was amazed to realize I could buy an actual piece of a show I liked. Almost like buying the actor in a weird sort of way. Most of it was cheap ($10-20 each) but I've paid a lot more for some of the more key pieces and more popular shows/movies.
