Koll RE7/6 and RE7F
The RE7 or 6 and RE7F is an asymmetrical, ergonomically designed, carved top, headless wonder. The original was made for Ron Eschete. He had played a Klein electric owned by one of his students. He loved the neck angle and how it sat on his leg. He wanted Saul Koll to make him something like it, only in a 7 string. At this time he was playing large traditional arch tops. While designing this guitar for him, Koll borrowed from each. As comfortable and great sounding as this instrument is, it remains somewhat an enigma, with only the most daring and brave playing it. It is probably the most comfortable Koll to play. It is primarily built as an electric guitar but has great acoustics, not unlike a small archtop (which it is!). Each RE, more so than any guitar that Koll makes, is ground up custom made. Koll experiments with every aspect each time (bracing, scale length, body depth, electronics, tuning, etc.).
The example shown here is the RE7F:
* Novax fan fretboard, ebony.
* 24.635" string length on treble, 26" string length on bass.
* 8th fret is perpendicular/standard.
* medium #141 frets.
* Fingerboard radius is approximately 12" - slight compounding to flatten as it goes up.
* Nut is unbleached bone.
* Neck is aged Honduran mahogany.
* Locking Sperzels
* Body, while it looks unusual, is constructed like a typical arch top guitar with carved sitka top, carved maple back, hand bent sides, mahogany blocks.
For the pickup on the RE7F, Saul Koll was going for a very clear and articulate voice, not unlike the old DeArmond monkey on a stick pickups. He found an Alnico lipstick not only had the voice he wanted but also was wide enough for the 7 string spacing.
The RE7F has a beautifully clear and present tone and works well set up with 6 flats, light gauge, and a round wound 7th. (A trick Saul learned from Ron Eschete, hence the "RE").

It's probably amazing, but not hot.

And volume knob red zone infraction. :embarrassed:

There is no blue zone....:embarrassed:

Interesting design. When I saw it my first thought was that he borrowed from Klein - and I was right. It happens occasionally. Not my thing though.

Reminds me of one of those half-buried seashells that catches your eye as you stroll through the surf. As you pull it out of the sand you're thinking it's going to be the most amazing shell ever, only to discover that huge chunks of it are missing. You carry it in your hand for awhile because it's kind of interesting in an odd sort of way, with an organic beauty all its own. Eventually though, you get tired of hanging on to it. Is it really something you want to keep? What will you ever do with this weird thing? So, you take one last look at it and cast it as far as you can into the ocean, to disappear forever from your world. Then you head across the seawall to get some pizza.

To paraphrase Forest Gump...

Sometimes, there's just not enough fire (with which to kill it).

It looks interesting, but is in the section of the local guitar store that they don't let cheapskates like me enter.
