Home Brewers: Where's a good place to get a complete beer-brewing kit?

that certainly will get the job done...

i really don't know if that's a good buy or not. i bought my stuff used, from a friend for $25...

i've since expanded my capabilities and have 4 buckets and a 4 pony keg kegarator... :thu:

i would suggest checking out craigslist for a kit if you wanna save some money....

check http://wwwhomebrewtalk.com <-- lot of good info here...

Cool, thanks. Never thought to check craigslist. I think there's a store around here that sells home brewing stuff too, I'll have to check that out.

Check out a homebrew store in your area....that way, you're not paying to ship bulky items like a full kit.

If you don't have anything close by, my favorite online suppliers are

www.midwestsupplies.com
www.northernbrewer.com

I see supplies on my local craigslist all the time and in many cases, they are some pretty sweet deals.

I'd skip the white noise of homebrewtalk and head over to www.homebrewchatter.com for a homebrew forum.

I bought pieces of my home brew setup from several vendors.

Midwest supplies is a great vendor. Recommended.

To start, you're going to need a few things, but the problem is (if you're like me) you'll always want more and more.

The kit you've posted has everything you need to get you started making beer, with the exception of maybe a large pot for doing the boil in. If you're doing extract kits, you can do the boil with maybe 3 gallons of water and then add top off water, but the best I've done has been with boiling the full wort at once. Turkey fryers make great beer brewing kettles, and don't let anyone scare you into not using aluminum to brew in.... it's fine.

If you go down this road, you're gonna have a lot of fun.....:embarrassed:

Great info, thanks. I knew I'd have to buy a big pot, I'll probably end up buying bottles too. I just don't wanna be taken for a ride by the guys in the store: "Oh you'll need a digital hydrometer and and laser-spectral CO2 graph to chart the fermentation process... that'll be $4250."

I don't know where you're specifically located but there's more than a few dudes in south central PA that belong to FAOM

http://www.f-o-a-m.org/

I'll probably wait until I brew at least one batch of decent beer before I go joining brew clubs.

another thing i would recommend is start buying grolsch.

i drank enough of it to completely rid myself of 12 oz cap type bottles and started using the self capping style grolsch bottles instead.

made the job a little easier.

that was all before i went to kegs...

it's very pleasing to drink some your home brew with a couple buddies and everyone is bragging on it... hell i even have a friend that liked it so much he joined me in my brewing efforts so now we brew twice as much and do some trading :thu:

here's what happens when you have 9 lbs of malt extract and no blow over tube

one of the best beers i ever made... 11.5 % ABV Double IPA chears

Dude... your bucket puked!

:)

3 times until i rigged a blow over tube.

i was laying on the couch watching tv and chilling about midnight when i heard what sounded like a muffled gun shot. i sat up and realized what had happened in about 2 seconds

+1 on supporting your local homebrew supply. Luckily for me, I have two: one that's convenient and one that's Rebel Brewer. :thu:

The coolest part is that the valve is totally clear.

Thanks for all the info folks, I'll probably check out the local store and give them my business once I'm all moved into the new place.

What supplies do you specifically need from a beer brewer supplier? I've made wine before but everything I needed I could always find at a local store.

Really, you can make 'beer' with an ingredient kit, a bucket from home depot, and some bottles. The other stuff just makes it a lot easier.
