HOLY CRAP, PRINCE DIED!!!!!

Well I guess my chances of ever again seeing a decent superbowl halftime show just dropped to zero:(

So glad I got to see him live. I didn't realize I had a "bucket list" of performers to see, but I guess I've got to start putting my back into seeing Tom Waits and Garth Hudson soon.

Was a fan, never got to see him live though.

I can picture some of these performers when they were younger- ( just a little while ago )...

They're on a big stage, making a ton of money, have all the best guitars & amps n' stuff. Having all the groupies they could ever want. They must have felt that it could last forever.
Then, they turn around, blink, & suddenly years & years have gone by. Then, they may say to themselves "Well shit, I guess it's over". Then they're gone forever.:(

Life is very very short...

The only artist that ever intimidated me when it came to trying to cover their material. I agonized over my White Elephant Recording of "When Doves Cry". I never felt like I was doing it justice. Such a sparse song, yet so intricate.

He was truly gifted beyond what seems possible. Even in my most stubborn phase of musical snobbery and compartnentalization, I was never afraid to proudly call myself a fan. That's not to say that I enjoyed his entire body of work. There were periods when what he was releasing didn't appeal to me, but never was there a time that I didn't have total respect and admiration for his brilliance and tenacity.

I risked life and limb when I was 15 to go see the Purple Rain movie with Kris Kidwell... the hottest girl in my high school by a mile, who was older than me by a year, and had a GTO driving, Metal loving 18 year old ex-boyfriend who refused to give up and had a lot of big scary friends. Word on the street was, if I showed up at the movie theater with Kris that night, I was a dead man.

No guts, no glory.

I went. I watched as that bright red GTO slowly circled the parking lot, full of goons looking to lump me up as we made our way inside. Some may have been too preoccupied with the impending doom that awaited them when the credits rolled. Not me. No way. I was having the time of my life with a smokin' hottie and watching one of the most anticipated films of my youth. I didn't give a second thought to those thugs. Prince, along with my date of course, turned what should have been two hours of pure dread and anguish into one of the most perfect nights of my teenage years. I owe him a debt of gratitude that is immeasurable. Thank you, your purple Majesty.

As for the goons and the hot chick... I never really heard much from either after that night. He and his pals were nowhere in sight after the movie, and the girl ended up ditching me for another older guy with a nice car. Oh well.

Tough guy wrecked that beautiful GTO a few months later.

Caught up with Kris a few years ago on Facebook. I dodged more than a car load of thugs as it turns out... much more.

Thanks Mr. Nelson.

Well hell, I just broke my first string in like 2 years. It was the high E string and it happened while I was playing along to Prince's "Slow Love" from the Sign o' the Times film. I was bending it beyond recommended tolerances, in the zone and going for a smooth two step bend up to the crescendo note. It rose and it rose and it was almost there .... and then snap. What a root note tease.

Oh well, the groove was badass while it lasted. I've been playing along with Prince quite bit last night and this morning. His music has such a blues and soul inflection, that finding the pocket is easy. But he's so fluid that the pocket doesn't stay in the same place for too long.

He was an undisputed master of the form.

Look out for increase in sales of Prince's music and videos/movies.
Already happening. Look out also for a wave of celebrities to take this opportunity to get in front of a camera and proclaim their life long fandom.

For me, Prince was one of those guys with an impressive body of work, a talented musician and a master show man. He also had the ability to find unknown top notch musicians for his band, many of whom were coincidentally attractive young women. He didn't always play it safe with his music, and did what he wanted instead of just trying to crank out the next hit. I appreciate all of that. But with all of that said, I was never a huge fan and only really liked handful of songs.

Nice way of saying it all 'cause I too follow similar thoughts. I love what he wrote for Sheila E as I was a big fan back when. Also dug other tunes ie: Bangles, Stevie Nicks, etc. that he wrote. When Lisa and Wendy came out with their debut album, I picked it up - great stuff and was the music of the times. It is too bad they didn't get more notoriety.

I've posted my opinions here in the past. I know Prince was a greatly respected composer and musician, but I never really 'got' his music. Maybe it was too 'pop' for me. Anyway, I have immense respect for the guy and his abilities to create hit songs, and it is a real loss to music to see him pass. I don't want to argue about my feelings, so I will not. I think he was a great musician, and I think we can all agree on that.
