Holiday Shopping: What Women Want, Men Don't Give

My parents always go way, way overboard with gifts, so Mrs. P and I generally stick to a pretty low budget and only a couple of items as gifts between the two of us.

Even on birthdays and anniversaries, we generally don't do much. We try to do a little more for the 5 and 10 year things, but even then, we usually would rather go on a trip somewhere, or we go out and get something both of us want.

Do jujitsu classes count as something you both want?

Giving a great gift is easy. Buy them something they want, but probably wouldn't buy for themselves. It's simple and effective.

That might work for folks with kids, where the disposeable income is spent on the kids all year long.

With me and Mrs. P, if we want something, we just go ahead and buy it whenever we want it (provided we have the funds for it). That means that come Christmas/birthday/anniversary time, we don't really have anything that we want but probably wouldn't buy for ourselves, because we've probably already bought it for ourselves. :embarrassed:

We're darn close to that stage even with the kids. Ours are all grown. Even with the youngest still at home, it's not too bad because she has a job and can buy her own stuff (mostly).
Not that I have a ton of disposable income, but I find ways to just get what we want when we want (within reason) and still cover the bills.

That makes it tough come time to figure out gifts. I've tended to go really big and cover off several events at once.
The latest: I figured out a way to manage a car payment and got my wife a new car (It was time to get rid of the truck anyway.) SOooo, I'm good for 7 years. :)

Her birthday and our anniversary is next weekend - she's getting car mats and snow tires. :P

This thread reminds me - Sunday is Mrs Ds birthday. And I have not gotten her a gift yet. And I'm not sure what to get. And my debit card just got cancelled due to the number getting swiped. And no - I had not forgotten. I just need to figure out which gift cards to get her now....:embarrassed:

I kept buying her guitars. Then after a couple months of them lying around unopened, I'd be like, "Hey, you don't mind if I open this and mess around with it a little bit, do you? Honey? Baby? Why aren't you saying anything? Why are your fists clenched? Why is your face so red?" idn_smilie

In the theme of "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach them to fish..."
Mrs. T loves this from last year:

It saves a fortune vs coffee at certain businesses.

Things I'd like to buy for my wife:

A hitman
A chair that plugs into 440vac
Cut brake lines
Nickelback CD's
Mad cow disease
Identity theft
Molotov cocktails

Last year, my girl and I did not buy for each other. We probably won't this year either. The thrill is not gone and last night was proof of that.

My family doesn't buy for each other any more either. We buy for the kids (there are only 2 - sweet!!) and I normally cash it. That's what they like most. I know cash thrilled me when I was young and I hardly ever saw cash. We are supposed to donate to a charity with out 'shopping budget'. Last year I didn't have a charity picked out right away so later in the year, I donated to a dog that got shot in the face with a shotgun and left for dead.

I'm not falling for that. Nothing says, "I couldn't be bothered to spend more than two minutes thinking about what you want," like a gift card. My wife would skin me alive if I did that.

Oh goodie for them.

News Flash: Women are often impossible to please. More at 11.

In other news: 1W and I usually go for some kind of couples gift and give that to each other. One year it was furniture. Another it was vacation, etc.
