HNGD, long time coming.....

Coralkong1

robbed of context
First, let me say "Hi." Long time, no see.
For those that may remember me, I haven't posted here in ages.....been busy with real life.

In any event, I recently got diagnosed with blood cancer, so I decided "Fuck It" and that it was time to get back into playing.
I've always wanted a Gibson LP (in some flavor), and looked long and hard at the offerings from Gibson. I told myself I'd like to keep it under $3K, and I wasn't opposed to buying used.....IF the guitar ticked all the boxes, and was a "good one".

I found a few on Gibson's website that I liked (especially the British Racing Green LP standard), but I was hesitant about buying from Gibson's website sight-unseen. Too many horror-stories, and honestly, justifyable so.

I went to my local Guitar Center and tried out about a half-dozen LP models. Every single one of them (up to a R9 I tried, just for giggles) had something seriously wrong with them (with the exception of one Standard, of which I didn't like the color). EVERY SINGLE ONE of them either had fret flaws, finish inclusions, fretboard issues, sloppy inlays, one had a crooked tuner, two had chunks missing out of the fretboard, the binding was sharp (or sloppy) on more than one I tried, etc....it was disheartening, and honestly, I was rather disgusted. $3K for THIS?!?!?!?

FF another month or so, and I still couldn't find what I was looking for.........until I stumbled upon THIS on Reverb. It was listed as "used" but described as mint. And it is mint. Not a single scratch to be seen anywhere.

2025 Eastman SB59 in Truetone gloss. 2 piece flamed maple top, single piece mahogany body, Ebony board, genuine SD 59 pickups, Kluson style tuners, frets are perfect, finish is perfect, action is perfect, hardshell case, the whole 9. The only thing it's missing are the fret nibs like a Gibson. It's perfect. No issues whatsoever. It's even been Plek'd. I used the money I saved not buying a Gibson to buy a H&K Tubemeister head and a 2X12 cab. This really is a killer guitar. Bottom line: I'm not saying all Gibson's suck, but boy.....you sure pay a premium for "Gibson" on the headstock. And if anyone's wondering, $1400.

So....HNGD to me, and good to see everyone again.

Welcome again.

Mojo but good for you to grab life and go.

Re: mwgl vs real life: “Is this real life or is this just fantasy?” Yes. Yes, it is.

And HNGD!
Eastman makes really nice stuff.

Cancer sucks ass. It's been my really weird experience that less-pricey Gibsons (e.g. specials, juniors) often seem better in terms of things like frets and bindings even if the paint's less polished. It's like Gibson only has so much time for each guitar and either spends on the stuff that makes it play good or the stuff that makes it look good...

That's a beauty. Enjoy.

I have been in treatment for Multiple Myeloma for about three years now. The first year was rough until one of the nurses figured out that I was having severe side effects from one of the meds. They discontinued that med and I am doing much better. I still get monthly maintenance treatment but the cancer is in remission. I wish you the best for your treatment and will keep you in my thoughts.

Howdy stranger!

HNGD! Eastman makes some great guitars. The guitarist in my bluegrass band chooses his Eastman over his Martin or his Collings when he plays with us. And I have played a bunch of their mandolins that punched well above their weight. I expect yours plays and sounds great.

@Gary Blanchard
Hey there, long time no see.
Myelofibrosis here.
Can't recommend it. Not good for you. Avoid it at all costs if you can. Not a good time.

So far, the doctors are able to keep it in check with weekly (sometimes twice a week) blood transfusions. I'm trying to get an appointment at Mass General for a stem cell transplant, which, if it doesn't kill me, could cure the issue. It's a waiting game. My arms have enough needle holes in them from giving and getting blood that I look like a junkie. They've got me on this medicine (Vonjo) that's $42k per month. Yes, you read that correctly. Insurance covers it, but that's ridiculous. Especially since it doesn't seem to be working.

Let me know when you're playing out again. Maybe I'll take a road trip and come see you.

Thanks for the well-wishes, everybody.
Been quite the journey. I guess that no matter what, you always come back to music.
I'm extremely pleased with the Eastman. If you get a chance to check out one of their guitars, I can highly recommend them. The Hughes and Kettner tube head is pretty killer, too (not going to lie, I love the blue light!). Cheap 2x12 ElectroHarmonix cab, but hey, I'm playing it at a half-watt, lol.
