How was the show? Did you take that video? If so, nice seats!
Not my footage! I've got tickets for Fort Worth in a few weeks and Denver in October.

There's a ton of video dropping on YouTube this morning. Even the bits that weren't perfect were perfect. Anika Nilles just became a goddamn legend overnight.

The most tiresome (and not unexpected) thing is all of the misogynist armchair quarterback trolls weighing in on what a mediocre job she did, how she's not Neil, etc. Like she's been playing CCR covers at the local sports bar until now. Like Geddy and Alex didn't deliberately reach out to her among all the players they could have chosen, and instead she just showed up on their doorstep begging to play.

There's no new album to support and no one needs the money. This is purely for fans and for the joy of playing. They could have selected any drummer on the planet and they chose Anika.

She’s got one of the greatest gigs in the business. Geddy and Alex are established enough to not have to ever play two nights in a row or long runs at a time without a break. She didn’t get the gig because she was an average drummer. Nobody sounds like Neil despite his enormous influences he had on so many drummers.

One thing that I find a bit weird is how little coverage and exposure Loren Gold is getting.

Apparently, he’s kind of hidden in the darkness of the stage.
I guess he’s more of a supporting role, but still.
His contribution allows Geddy to move around more on stage. That’s not nothing.

They got Aimee Mann on stage for Time Stand Still.
I wonder if she’s doing the whole tour of if that song is one that they’ll rotate in and out.

Same thought about Losing It. Will they rotate that in when Dinklage or Mink are available to play violin?

You know they invited her to play so there'd be at least one woman at the show (yeah, I know, not my joke originally). I might see the Philly show. Not sure yet. Not the hugest fan, but it's something of an event.

She’s a different drummer than Neil with different style, different feel, and different energy. They could have hired someone to clone what Neil did, but they chose Anika to bring her own ideas, flare, and skills to the music.

The reason some people are criticizing Nilles goes back to something Peart once said, “People don’t come to hear something different. They come to hear what they love.” Anika is different. For some that’s a betrayal of what they love.

It’s a common theme when a musician steps into a spot in a popular band, previously held by a different player. There’s always a contingent that expects the parts to be played the same way they remember them. Yet, a drummer at her level isn’t looking to play a cover gig.

Apparently, a lot of famous drummers DID immediately show up on their doorstep, offering ( begging) to play. I think they found it pretty distasteful. Anika is a phenomenal drummer. Check out her band Nevell. She was also recommended to the band by a Rush tech who worked with her on a Jeff Beck tour as someone who could probably hang both musically and personally. I love that they are giving younger unknown blood a chance. I have heard several high end musicians comment after seeing a performance, with all due respect to Neil, that she has a much deeper pocket than he did. He was phenomenal, but not necessarily a pocket player. I think that something like that can only make their performances more interesting.
