Guitar Fantasy Camp

I just got served an ad for this $10k guitar.

I could purchase Smurfco and all his guitars for that.
That's a nice looking guitar. I don't think it's $10k nice, but it is nice. Interesting bridge, haven't seen one of those before. But for $10k, you can keep your "heavy relic".

That's a Ron Thorn guitar.... like my Pink Thorn R/S.

When it was brand new, it was a $3200 guitar. I'm the second owner and I got it for 2K.... and after Ron became the Principal Master Builder at Fender the prices on his guitars started skyrocketing.

This is what made me go searching for the Suhr that I'm playing now, because of fear that I wouldn't be able to afford to replace it if it was ever stolen.

Now since last year, the prices have come back down and I've seen a few Thorns that are closer to my price range, but there are limited numbers and choices of spec out there as only a few hundred were made.

I'll see one that "Oooh... I really like that one!!!... " until I see the price.

I can’t wrap my head around the concept of a new $11k Fender Telecaster. I love Teles but unless he carves the whole thing by hand, winds the pickups by hand and sprinkles magic fairy dust on it it doesn’t seem worth it.

Well, I can't speak for that particular one.... but my Pink Thorn was made with hand wound pickups, all of the screws are tiny brass ferrules inserted into the body and then the guards attach with little machine screws, the locking tuners are all staggered so no string tree, and the neck is key'd into the neck pocket shape and connected with stainless ferrules and machine bolts.

Also, the vintage nitro lacquer is 50's accurate pink and has checked, cracked, and worn accordingly in all of my outdoor gigs. Also the Mann made trem bridge and block are all milled from one big block of brass... not a plate on top of a block.

I agree, a high quality guitar made with high quality stuff but, one thing I'm scratching my head about. What is gained by "neck is key'd into the neck pocket shape"?

The neck fits into the pocket so securely that it literally can be strung up without the neck screws in. The tuning stability even in the most extreme heat on an outdoor stage is unmatched by any of my other guitars. :baimun:

Please understand, I'm not dissing it, I just honestly still don't understand. Things I associate with excellent tuning stability- high quality bridge, tuners, wood and the craftsmanship of filing the nut and fit of the bottom of the neck pocket. I just don't get how the key would add anything that another guitar made at such a high quality and with the neck screwed on wouldn't stay in tune just as good.

So I think I might be ready to place an order. I’m really debating aesthetics at this point. Mostly it’s a choice between something safe/normal and something uncharacteristically bold.

I’m torn because this is a big purchase, but I also have normal guitars so I’m thinking maybe I need a weird guitar.
