You guys are making me want an amp even more! My guitar is outgrown too...What should I buy first, guitar or amp?

welcome to Gear Acquisition Syndrome, the idea that a piece of equipment will either magically make you a rock god, or will be the missing link in your collection.

shut up and play yer guitar.

Fender Squier Bullet, Lyon Washburn Def Leppard series, Roland Micro Cube (2 sad, pathetic watts) Barber Direct Drive DP, Boss OS-2.

that's some pretty decent stuff for a starter rig. my practice amp is a '68 Fender Vibro Champ. its only 6 watts.

Um. OK. I f I were you I would upgrade the amp. You're pretty limited on sounds with the microcube. But really, I agree with Howie. Shut up and play your guitar. :embarrassed: Youve got enough to practice and learn on.

My first amp was a Peavey Rage.

But yeah, I'd say a new amp would open up a lot of possibilities for you. If the guitar plays good and you like the feel of it, pickups can be bought pretty cheap, and can fine tune your tone.

I have been playing for 2 years and I'm trying to record some stuff at my Dad's house that's why I'm anxious to get some better equipment.

get a line 6 guitar port, or some other device that allows you to plug right into your computer. you'll get better sounds that way.

My computer sucks to badly...Plus I want to do some live stuff as soon as I get into a band.

You don't really need an amp to record. Get yourself a Pod or something.

How much are those?

If your computer sucks too bad for a Toneport, then how are gonna record at all? Do you have a standalone multitracker or something?

The Pocket Pod goes for about $100 I think.

a POD will allow you to plug directly into your computer. so maybe what you need here isn't a new amp, but a computer that will allow you to do what you want.

you can also plug the POD into a power amp and speaker, and have it voice everything for you. my friend John from GJ used a POD into a Crate solid state amp and a cabinet for one show i saw him play. while he and i have different tastes in tone, i could see that being a highly tweakable/portable rig. add the computer into the mix to record everything/play loops and can be your own one man band.

Well, you don't really need a super computer if you're just gonna be playing over some backing tracks. I think if you've got more than about a 1 ghz processor and 500 mb of RAM, you'll probably be able to do several tracks worth of stuff before your computer starts running into problems.

The Toneport is probably the easiest/cheapest way to go for computer recording.

Prages (or anyone else that knows) can you explain to me the difference in the GuitarPort vs. the TonePort?

Would one of those Michael Schenker pickups sold my Dean Guitars give you that Schenker tone? Of course not completely, but would it help sound like it a little bit?

Looks like the major difference is that the Toneport has an XLR/mic pre built in and the Guitarport doesn't.

I've never used either one though, so there could be many more differences.

A pickup isn't gonna radically change what you sound like. It's more of a fine tuning of your tone.
