avuncular to no one
I was listening to them last week whilst finishing up Howard Goodall's The Story of Music. I've enjoyed some of his solo work, but similar to Sting, his best stuff was with his first big band. I can't think of any better runs of five albums, let alone first five albums from a band that are better...

Well, maybe the Police, but still. Killer songs with stellar guitaring. I only saw them once on the Brothers In Arms tour when I was 13 or fourteen and had barely been playing guitar, but they were amazing. Billy Joel showed up for a tune as did David Sanborn...great stuff.

I hope you all enjoy the poll.

I know they must have other songs, but the only two I can think of are "Sultans of Swing" and "Money for Nothing." I wouldn't mind if I never heard either of those tunes ever again.

Oddly I don't see an option for this Sultans of Swing that you ingrates seem so obsessed with. Have you heard Skateaway? I hear it's a pretty good tune.

well, yer gonna be shit outta luck, then

I never really listened to them.
Sultans, Walk of Life, and the MTV song were enough to turn me off.
The evils of radio overplay I guess.

There was a guy in my college dorm who spent an entire year trying (unsuccessfully) to learn Sultans Of Swing on guitar. I'd be happy to never hear that song again, and the 10 minute version on Alchemy is terrible even without the constant butchering from down the hall.

Still, a very good player who has had (and continues to have) a very good career.

the only album I own from them is Butters in Arms

Sultans of Swing blew my mind when I first heard it on FM Radio. I had never heard anything like it. I even learned to play a simple version from my first instructor, who had us perform it in a student band he put together. I still love the song, but I will pick Telegraph Road as a favorite because I hear it less.

Telegraph Road and Brothers In Arms for DS.

These days I'd much rather listen to Mark's recent albums like Get Lucky or Privateering. Excellent stuff.
