Eagles dethrone the king of pop and mutilated noses

It makes logical sense that a greatest hits album would out sell regular albums. Theoretically, they're filled with a higher concentration of proven songs. The fact that they are more likely to sell is why they were released in the first place.
I was thinking that very thing. I am an Eagles fan (though they lost me with Hotel California), but I bet their "regular" albums haven't sold like that.

That's a really good point and really says a lot about how exceptional Thriller was.

Oh yeah, "The Girl is Mine" is a masterpiece.

While I get that MJ's music isn't for everyone (is anyone's?), the Thriller album is pretty close to a Greatest Hits release even though it was just a "normal" studio release. So sticking with the OP's premise of accomplishment in terms of sales/popularity, it is very impressive.

A quick look at the tracks on Thriller:

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - Peaked at #5, 15 weeks in the top 100
Baby Be Mine - Not released as a single
The Girl Is Mine - Peaked at #2, 18 weeks in the top 100
Thriller - Peaked at #4, 17 weeks in the top 100
Beat It - Peaked at #1, 25 weeks in the top 100, stayed at #1 for 3 wks
Billie Jean - Peaked at #1, 25 weeks in the top 100, stayed at #1 for 7 wks
Human Nature - Peaked at #7, 14 weeks in the top 100
P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) - Peaked at #10, 16 weeks in the top 100
The Lady In My Life - Not released as a single

I prefer the king of poop and wet noses to both the Eagles and MJ:

What's dumb is Glen's Frey's face.

Depending on the band, non-singles can often be some of the stronger songs and some that I like the best. But since those generally need to grow on you from repeated listenings, they do not make for radio hits which need to catch you right away. I rarely buy greatest hits collections from any band for that very reason.

But I agree about Glen Frey....

Let us not forget that while the man was ridiculously talented, MJ was a "performer". His musical and lyrical contributions to his own catalog are minuscule at best. If not for A LOT of help from top tier writers, producers, and Session musicians, his career beyond being the little kid in the Jackson 5 is highly questionable. It is what it is. Not trying to take anything away from him, just drawing the distinction. As a performer he had no peers.

Love them or hate them, Eagles were musicians. They too benefited from writing help outside the band, some of their biggest hits were written by a local guy where I grew up.

However, on their own... they still churned out a metric fuck ton of music that transcended genres and had mass appeal seldom seen. Through their various line ups, they consistently sought excellence. So much talent among the members of that band.

I won't get into the stupid arguments that always ensue from their mention, I'll just say that there's good reason despite "your" personal tastes that this achievement was reached, and I'll take a great musician over a great performer any time.

Well put. I think the single biggest reason people hate on The Eagles is because of The Big Lebowski.

Most people can't think for themselves even trendy fucks with elitist taste in music.

My biggest hang up with The Eagles was the slick production. That being said, I met a guy who had the Eagles stay at his bed and breakfast years and years ago and he said they sat on the porch singing for him and his neighbors until the wee hours and it was the tightest singing he's ever heard.

Personally, I wouldn't pay to see them in person, but if a song of theirs comes on, I can't help but sing along.

I hated the Eagles long before The Big Lebowski. All that movie does is make a funny joke out of it. The only credit the Eagles deserve is giving Tom Waits a monthly paycheck. And even that recording is mind numbingly boring.

The Cohen bros were having a hard time getting Townes Dead Flowers licensed for the movie. They got the guy with the rights, a former manager of some sort, to watch it. When it got to that line about the Eagles he stood up said he'd seen enough and they could have it.

The Eagles were very much a reflection of the times, along with other groups dismissed as yacht rock. Their music suited the times, and many of us still have fond memories of the songs and the good times we had while hearing them. I get why they may not appeal to younger folks, but they were part of the soundtrack of my life.

I didn't like the Eagles until the documentary. I could sing some of their songs sure. But back when Hotel California came out I was between prog rock and punk. The Eagle didn't fit in that scenario. Strangely enough Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and The Dead did. But I enjoy the songs Glen sang. Witchy Woman was a stupid song, albeit masterfully performed and recorded.

Oh, and I saw them live at Cal Jam in 1974.

I recognize and honor that. They certainly have their talents and achievements. And their songs are weirdly addictive. As I said, very effective ear worms. Not my preference much. But no denying the talent.
