Not what I remembered, but Nirvana did it.
I don't pay close enough attention. These days I just figure they have wireless.

Lovin' Spoonful did that on Ed Sullivan when they did Summer in the City.Who was it that purposely goofed off and made it obvious they weren't playing while performing on a show in the 60s or 70s?
That's what I was thinking of, not Petty.
THAT’S THE ONE!Lovin' Spoonful did that on Ed Sullivan when they did Summer in the City.
They do their best, but when the traffic sounds come in, John just throws up his hands, shrugs, then goes back to pretending.THAT’S THE ONE!
Thank you.
Like Springsteen?Yep, it does. It also annoys me when I see a band and the singer is supposedly playing guitar but you can't hear it in the mix at all.
Like Springsteen?
At times, he's got Nils Lofgren, Little Steven, his wife, and himself on guitar. I'm sure the soundman has one or two of them nearly muted at all times.Oh God, yeah. What was up with that? I feel like all the 80s live footage has him banging away at the guitar and not a note coming out. And I like his guitar playing, I don't know why they did that.
