Do you think Phil has enough knobs on that bass?

I will say that I don't think it was wasted on Phil; he would know how to get the most from it.
I read a book on the Dead's gear where they went into a fair amount of detail on all the stuff they tried out through the years, and most all of it made sense on some level. Not all of it was practical on stage, but it came from them trying to solve problems they were running into, or getting something out of the instruments they wanted/needed.
I kinda want a guitar with an effects loop, where the pickup signal goes straight out to the effects, then back into the guitar to go through the tone and volume pots, then out again to the amp. Jerry had that setup for a while, and it'd improve my sound, even in the pizza parlors and such I'm playing.

was reading a book recently that mentioned how much of a perfectionist Phil was/is. he kinda annoyed some producers apparently who maybe didnt feel the need for such a deep dive into bass tone perfectionism.

but he is an absolute beast who has devoted his life to his craft so there is certainly a lot to respect about that.

The Phil Zone is a strange place for a lot of bass players. The one? Who needs it?
There's 2 drummers, and a stageful of other musicians any of whom can carry the downbeat at any time.
And when Phil decides to let you know that he knows where the one is... you know it, the Phil Bomb is legendary.
My fav thing about Phil is his spontaneous countermelodies to Jerrys solos. When he's in the zone its downright spooky.
