Phil's one of those people who can play anything - he's played violin, brass, woodwinds, etc. I think it's great for folks like him to be able to infinitely shape their tone for each song.
For people like me (tin ear/partial hearing loss) one volume and one tone knob are more than sufficient.

Jerry was playing a regular strat at that time. Then he got the Alligator strat, and by then Alembic had made Phil a bass.

I was reading on Dozin that it was pretty noisy due to the filters being from telephone equipment. Alembic learned and got better.
