Do you take vacations from your job?

A full week away from home and the office....generally no. I did for my honeymoon - which was not that long ago (2 1/2 years) - but the time before that was probably a decade earlier. We did not have access to cheap get away places so usually our trips were long weekends. One of our issues is I get 4+ weeks of vacation every year....my wife gets only 2. But I've also worked here 20 years....

But - I will be off and out of the country in a few months for two weeks. Looking forward to that immensely.

2007 a week off to the Northern LP and the UP of Michigan.
2012 a week off to extreme upper New Hampshire on the Quebec border.
2015 2 weeks in Costa Rica
2017 2 weeks in Colombia
2018 2 weeks in Colombia again.

The first two I picked because they had cool birds, moose, possibility of grey wolves UP-MI, and a reduced cell phone coverage.
The others because I wanted to experience a whole new world of birds you can't see here.

Two weeks off makes a difference!

Hopefully Panama, Guyana or Cuba next year.

I take a week off here and there, usually twice a year but I don’t always leave town for a real vacation. As long as I’m off work long enough to completely lose the track of time and totally screw up my circadian rhythm, I’m good. I don’t feel like I’ve been away from work long enough until I do both.

Stay-cations work out okay for me. I can ignore email pretty well.

I have gone away a couple of times in the past. It really didn’t factor into being away from my job any more than a stay-cation.

a full 7 day week ? If so then never because I've only ever had 5 work days off in a row (along with the pre and post weekend) and I'm not one to come back on a Sunday night then go back to work the next day....fuck that! I need the decompression time. IMHO I'd rather cut the trip short in order to have that extrad day or two to unwind before going back...

I seem to go in binges as far as traveling vacations. I might go two or three years in a row and then I don't go for another six or seven.I do however try to go camping ( no campground bullshit, National forest dispersed for me thanks) for a couple day or three if I don't go on a staying in motel trip.
last proper trip I took was 5 days in 2015 to SW Colorado/Utah, same in 2014 and 2013 I went 5 days to California/Nevada.

I usually take one weeklong vacation to a destination with the family. Sometimes it’s a pain in the ass to get away from work but sometimes people will just have to do without.

I get two weeks off at the end of the year as holidays. That time is the best because most everyone is off at the same time so the work and emails don’t pile up.

Otherwise I take a lot of 3 and 4 day weekends or half-days off spontaneously if the weather is nice or people piss me off.

Next year I get a 5th week.

Nope. When I lived in Florida, I did. I worked for the school district, so the whole district closed for 2 weeks at Xmas and 1 week in the summer. I’ve always been the sole systems admin, so taking a week off means I am slammed solid for a month if I take a week off and at some point, they will all me for something if I’m gone, so why bother.

Haven’t taken a week to go somewhere in years. May do it next year. As it is, though, I am taking 9 days for our move starting next week, and should have about half of that time to settle into the new place and chill. It will be glorious.

I haven't taken an entire week since my honeymoon to Hawaii in September 2002. My wife and I are going to a cabin in Ellijay this Thursday through Saturday and that's about normal for a "long" vacation for us.
My oldest son and I are doing 3 days in London and one day in Paris right before Thanksgiving and then I'll be off but at home until the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Were on holiday just now. Flight lands at about 11pm Sunday and we're both back in on Monday

This thread makes me sad, I can't quite wrap my head around the general US work life balance (or lack thereof)

We travel as often as possible. If I do give up the DJing and we don't have kids by then I want to spend summer 2021 bouncing around South America.

It must be cheaper to travel in Uk/Euroland. I always read about folks taking holiday abroad where as in the US people with money go abroad or people with lotsa leasure time like students.

I don't think my situation would be any differant over there if say for instance I transplanted my work situation . My hurdle has always been working in a small business (three people or less) , being single (money does not stretch as far) and having a dog. I would rather have a dog than travel far though. If I can't take the dog I don't wanna go:)

We typically take a cruise once a year.

We are currently trying to plan a week in CA to visit our youngest daughter, but we can't get her to commit to specific days (damned millennials). We plan on sightseeing around LA, then doing a 4 day cruise out of Long Beach.

Not often. Not so much because of my job but my wife has a hard time scheduling time off.
That's part of our problem as well. My wife is sitting on 3 weeks PTO right now that expires 12/31 and she can only roll over 40 hours. She is just too damn busy to even take a day here and there.

Id argue you guys can travel cheaper, at the very least comparative - we go to the carribean a lot and the Yanks there pay buttons because flights are so cheap. You guys coming to Europe is a different kettle if fish but even at that, my wife and several pals have flown from the States to Europe much much cheaper than it costs us to fly there.

My old boss was a legend, we were in Vegas over Xmas and nye 2017 and got home the day before the schools went back. She told me to work from home as long as I did work on the schools charity stuff.

I had a lovely day in bed to recover, Tuesday, had prepped a bunch of stuff before we flew out to show her on the Tuesday when I went in and all was good. She even made up a course I was on tge Monday to explain to other people why I wasn't in :embarrassed:
