Question: Do you remember the sting from putting putting Bactine on your cuts?

Bactine never stung for me. Iused to do peroxide and liked to watch it bubble up say for instance on road rash after crashing on my BMX.
I've got a hihj tolerance for pain anymore though after 30 years turning the wrenches....had some nasty cut, etc. here's my latest doodad...it got slightly infected but it's on the mend now o ly today I was taking one of those band clamps off a radiator hose and got my thumb pinched by it...suprised it didn't gush green goop out. i had one years ago si milar and I slipped on the wrench and smashed the swollen finger and a buncha green goop came out ....
The skin peeling is because the swelling went down and the hose clamp ripped the loose skin :embarrassed:

My mom was always more of the "rub some dirt in it and keep playing" school of thought. My parents were (now retired) both microbiologists, so I think they were fans of getting some immune system exposure to most stuff and not sweating sanitizing in general.

(not literally rubbing dirt in cuts, but maybe a bandaid if it was bleeding, or a trip to urgent care for stitches when needed)

I’m always getting cuts and what not on my hands. It took about a week to enjoy hand sanitizer.

I’ll never forget the smell of that stuff. Cheap scotch (and some other whiskeys) smell like Bactine so I can’t drink the stuff. I once went into a hipster Scotch bar in Brooklyn that sold cheap whiskey to dumb twentysomethings and the place smelled like they used Bactine to wash the floors.

No, but I remember merthiolate. We just never told our parents we were hurt because merthiolate burned more than any injury.

I remember getting a little cut at a friend's house and his mom broke out the Mercurochrome, braced myself for the horrible sting... . I had no idea any alternatives existed. Wondered WTF is wrong with my parents.

My mom wouldn't even give us bandaids unless we had to stanch the bleeding--"that wound need to breathe!"
That's pretty much how I grew up too. Let it scab, mom would say. When an antibacterial was needed, it was pouring some peroxide on it and letting it bubble for a while before putting on the band aid. I don't think we even had Bactine in the medicine cabinet.

I remember Bactine but don't remember it stinging. Like others, I remember the merthiolate and mercurochrome burning, but I seem to remember that Bactine was preferred because it didn't hurt. But that was sixty years or so ago.

Bactine is still available. I fortunately haven’t seen those other two in ages, nor would I use them. They also colored your skin that dark orange color. Fortunately, we aren’t small children anymore.
