Question: Do people hate Gibson so much that free guitars are no longer enough?

Maybe Gibson is going to start a record label that doesn’t treat artists like shit. That would be pretty cool.
But realistically I think the new execs have already forgotten how losing focus fucked Gibson up the last time around.

Just think of all the tasty new C&D letters their lawyers can dream up

To be fair, I have a 2021 LP Tribute that is fantastic, QC and all. For a MIA guitar, it is about the best bargain out there.

Well, I was encouraged by the “Inspired By” line when they were announced, but I gotta say, both the LP Jr. and 335 I had (briefly before returning) had quite a few QC issues, mainly with the godawful fret work - either scattered high frets, rough finishing, or both. I also grabbed one of the last Bonamassa ‘58 LP Black Beauties, and it was a fantastic guitar, but AGAIN, the sloppy fret work made it expendable.

Contrast the current Epis with similarly- (or lower-) priced PRS, Yamaha, Gretsch, Schecter, Squier, etc. MIC/MII/MIK imports, and I find those much better-built. I currently have two cheap Gretsches (and have had a few others) with damn-near flawless frets, and rival Epi in build quality. Why can’t Epi do the same on a consistent basis?

The Ephi I just got (Riviera) seems to be very good from a QC point of view. Maybe is is an exception, but I am pretty impressed with it. I have also heard good things about the new Epiphone Alex Lifeson model.

I like my Gibsons just fine, but the management of that company is just the craziest shit I have ever seen. It might be better now that the robot tuner era of Henry J, but they need to focus on actually making good guitars that don't cost 10K and forget about signing a bunch of dad rockers to some record label. Anyone here going to rush out and get Kirk's new album? It is like they are not even trying to run a guitar company and heading down that stupid lifestyle rabbit hole again. Only guitar players care about guitars. My wife loves music and can't tell a fucking thing about what guitar someone has in a band beyond what color it is. She just doesn't care. No one but us, the players, actually cares...and we only care when they make GOOD guitars people want. The lifestyle is a small group of people that really care about the function of the product, not the image. It is a strategy they are guaranteed to lose.

They picked up Hammet? After picking up Mustaine? Would it kill them to sign deals with people who actually play Gibson guitars like Matt Pike and Jus Oborn? I guess Hammet does have that 59 he pulls out from time to time but Gibson already sells plenty of 59s without him.

He owns Peter Green’s burst, right?

Nothing happening in downtown Nashville these days is a pleasant experience. Are they going to have $80 t-shirts like Memphis?

i went thru my gibson phase back in the 70's. i owned several actual vintage (late 50's & early 60's) Gibsons. i have a 2008 or 09 Les Paul, that i haven't put 20 minutes of play time on in 5 years. i don't need another one.
since i've actually owned and played some of the holy grails, i'm not all that interested in what's being made now. and i'd never pay what they're asking for the old ones, today.
so, i don't hate them, i'm just not interested any more.

I've often said that the only way I'll own another Les Paul is if I can find one I can afford, and it was made in Kalamazoo.

Seriously, if I'd want another Les Paul style guitar now I'd just get an ESP instead. It's not "authentic", but very likely a better guitar that you can actually trust.

Once in really started thinking about the Mustaine and Hammett endorsements it actually makes sense; their fan bases are probably mostly older now with more disposable money to buy a Gibson sig model. They've been dragging Mustaine out for all manner of PR events, including the unveiling of that Gibson garage

100%. Back when I did want an LP style guitar that's exactly what I did. The guitar was excellent in every way, I just decided it wasn't what I was looking for.

I've looked at those and like them.... but I suspect the next guitar I buy will be an S2 PRS.
