Distortion Pedals

in seriousness how about a JHS Kilt? It is their version of the Bixonic Expandora which is itself Rat-based. I have an original Expandora and I got the kilt since the Expandora's in a bigger housing and I ran out of board room. It can fuzz but I think it's pretty good distortion. It might be too fuzzy though...

Here's a video from my friend Joe Edelmann comparing the Kilt to an original Expandora (which happens to be mine!)

Since you mentioned the Expandora pedal, decibelics.com makes a dead on clone of it in a mini enclosure for about the same price as the JHS Kilt 2. They call it The Reverend.

Decibelics also makes one of the most accurate clones of a Klon Centaur but in a mini size. Part for part, it’s a more accurate Klone of the Centaur than a KTR or many others out there.

They make other pedals as well. It’s a little bit more involved to order one of their pedals because they are hand built in monthly batches. So, you have to contact them right when they open up orders for a new monthly batch, preorder before all the slots are full that month and then wait for them to build that months batches and ship your stomp out to you.

I’ve never owned one of their pedals. But, I hear big praise from those who have bought and owned their stomps.

Never played a Rat but the Grunge is an altered Rat Circuit (so says JHS) and has just massive sustaining gain. Compared to the Metal Zone it’s much thicker, I guess that’s how I describe it, growl when you let power chords sustain. They just sound good. Chug is as chunky too. Out of the MT2, Uber Metal, Bone Shaker, Metal Core it is the heaviest.

One of my eternal pedal regrets is selling my Barber Dirty Bomb...that thing was a beast of a pedal that did many things very well...

I'd say get a Black Mass 1312 (modded Rat with selectable clipping diodes on a rotary switch) or get a EHX Rams Head BMP and an EQ. The reason I suggest the EQ is that I discovered with the "strangle switch" on my Jaguars (and my Jazzmaster that I modded with one) if you lop the bass frequencies off with a BMP you suddenly get a really nice distortion without the wooly fuzz. It's nice to have options.

I like the Fender Pugilist. 2 cascading gain stages and a series/parallel switch gives some pretty thick and beefy distortion tones.

Mooer Black Secret is a RAT and a Turbo RAT in one pedal. I'd say it's a no-brainer at that price.
