The situation sucks, for sure, but I can’t think of a time ever when the total charge wasn’t read out to me when paying for a purchase.
Never mind looking at your receipts. Pay attention to the people that serve you your food and beverages.

I find it odd that there’s no mention of going back to the Starbucks location to have it addressed. It would have come up when they cashed out the system for the day or even the shift.

So, I can’t be the only one who glances at the receipt when they use their money cards, regardless of type, or Apple Pay?

I would have not left the parking lot and been inside saying fix it. Fix it now.

I would’ve gone full on Karen and demanded they fix it
Just yesterday do to that debit card issue in the “brushed” thread I made…. They still had two of the same charges (99.99) at the same place which were unauthorized, well they ended up authorizing them even after I had spoke to someone the day before….so I went full Karen and now they are credited back the lady explained it unlike the previous guy that these two charges were initially authorized and it was only after the third charge(all at an online casino) that they flagged my account. Anyway though had I not called and bitched and moaned it could’ve taken up to ten days…she got it resolved in minutes.

...so every time I make my own coffee at home I'm saving like - *counts on fingers* - $20,000!

Time to pick out a new guitar!

So, first of all, they weren't told that their total was over $4000? And they didn't look at their receipt? And the credit card company didn't question a $4000+ tip?

And they think Starbucks is good coffee?????

I legit tipped the manager $50 recently where I get coffee every day, and in turn she’s been giving me the sweet bro discount just about every time now :embarrassed: That sucks though for that couple, Starbucks is decent but grossly overpriced.

Um. Why not contact your card provider to dispute the charge and initiate a chargeback? I mean, people request chargebacks for WAAAAAAY less in terms of disputes with retailers. Why is anyone cutting a check in this situation to pay this couple back?

If this really was a POS/card processor/“network” issue, seems like there’s plenty of remedies available. And any card provider would be prepared to work to contest the charge. Seems fishy.

I make my own coffee at home from a teabag. It's cheaper and more delicious!
This is what I do except I use an aeropress or pour over. I can buy any brand of bean I want so the variety is constant and it's right there for me as soon as I wake up , or anytime of the day. The only time I do a coffee store these days is if I'm traveling.

Many, many years ago, I accidentally paid the equivalent of $250 for a case of beer and a pack of cigarettes at some dodgy corner shop. Paid with card but got my 'change' immediately no problem. In cash.
