Christmas dinner jam - what are you cooking, bringing and drinking?

Will be at the inlaws' up in ATL, probably the last time (they're moving to Inverness FL to be nearer M-i-L's sisters). So at most we're bringing some beer for me, and wine as presents for the inlaws. And these 2:

I'm sure there'll be plenty of wine, beer, and champagne. I don't really do wine, being a beer person. But I have developed a taste for champagne on our recent travels in Europe, we had it most every night.

I have no idea what the food will be. Probably turkey or ham, salad, mashed potatoes, the usual.

Dinner has started in earnest today.

Chocolate gingerbread truffles are done and in the fridge.

We've popped out for a couple of drinks.

Dinner roll dough is proving and the gelato is going in the Ankarsrum once we get home.

All the shopping is in. I'm picking up the ham tomorrow. I've got a spreadsheet taped to the fridge with all the timings from tonight right through to digging in on Christmas day :thu:

These 2? The amp and guitar?

So we had our extended family get together over the weekend… and I brought the Hot Ones sauces. :helper:

Once everyone got to DaBomb beyond insanity, they all started to melt down. I was laughing my ass off at them.

My one niece ran outside and stuck her tongue in the snow on the grill cover. :lmbo:

Lamb would be awesome but my family in general are picky so I wouldn't risk it.

Drama with Mrs jbj and I today when our meat delivery was "pending". On the upside it was her idea to go to a weird whole seller but not really a whole seller type butcher place instead of a y know, actual butcher but it all turned out fine. Ham looks great, awesome streaky bacon and square sausage for lazy breakfasts this week.

Low key cooking day today, I made my stock for the soup. May have left it on the hob for about 8 hours by accident (couldn't work out why the pot was still warm!) but I noticed it, didn't burn the house down and it smells amazing.

Game time tomorrow doing my soup, sous vide the veg, making the stuffing etc... plus doing the ham.

I've made a big spreadsheet. On paper, providing my bread rolls turn out ok, I have very little other than popping the cauliflower cheese in the slow cooker and sticking a few things in the oven to do on the big day. :thu:

Lol, presents open and food got started, then the rest took naps and I finished and prepped to serve.. 14 people.

2 days before one of my scratch cakes was requested and I dropped everything to shop for ingredients and get that done. I have one that’s chocolate and fairly quick and easy. I have a yellow cake that is made in stages and takes a minute. If made a little off it can taste like corn bread. Turned out very well and was much appreciated .

My wife requested eggnog Christmas Eve Day as I went off to the store. Predictably, the grocery store was sold out when I got there. So, I looked up a simple recipe and bought the ingredients.

Below are pics of the recipe. Below that, I’ll list my tweaked version (extra ingredient = vanilla ice cream) which I think improves it. Also, I used 2% milk because that’s what we buy. Whole milk would likely improve the recipe that much more. Their recipe calls for low-fat milk.

My recipe tweaks double the amount of drink…
2 & 1/3 cups milk
2 & 1/3 cups vanilla ice cream (Blue Bell Homemade)
4 large eggs beaten (pasteurized egg substitute for safety)
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 & 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Add milk, beaten eggs and vanilla to mixer and mix. Add sugar and nutmeg, mix. Add ice cream last, mix. Because of the ice cream addition, you can serve immediately.

Obviously, you can add alcohol. My wife prefers it without.

*It could possibly use a touch more nutmeg*

1) I wanted to make homemade eggnog a couple of years ago. All involved said a huge no. Wife and I don't do alcohol and they said homemade eggnog needs alcohol to make it safe. Whatever.

2) Yesterday, I'm watching yet another Hallmark Christmas movie, one of the events they go to is an eggnog tasting. They each get a flight of eggnogs. That was the point that I remembered I bought eggnog for Christmas. I forgot it was in the fridge, crammed behind everything else.

Dinner went down a storm - the one issue being that I made far too much. My gran and sister took plenty of leftovers away, I've just turfed out the last of the lentil soup which I've been living off of the past few days and no one could face a cheeseboard so Mrs JBJ and I are digging into that tonight.

Apparently, the way to make homemade eggnog safe is to make it with pasteurized eggs. So far, I got lucky. The next batch will have pasteurized eggs.

When younger we always made eggnog from eggs (duh). Never thought about the raw stuff and since we were kids no alcohol was involved. What was good enough for Rocky was good enough for us I suppose

I made another batch of my eggnog. This time, I used a pasteurized egg substitute. Egg Beaters is what the store had in stock. My wife, son and I all love it.
