My second thought was a record player, but that concept fell out of fashion earlier than 67.
Some were still available in other marques in the early 6os.

I asked over on moparnuts.com and get some solid info.
"I've seen a few "factory" (factory accessory, either dealer-installed or sold at the parts counter--never an assembly-line part) tissue boxes over the years at shows, swap meets, and junkyards. They most-often seem to be the exact same chrome unit with whichever carmaker's logo in the round indentation where the one you posted has the American Motors "AM" badge."
So, it'snot just an AMC snot-defender box, but available for many makes.
