Car batteries are really heavy...

Years back friend of mine was sharpening an axe head in a vise.
As he was finishing up, it slipped out of the vice and landed, edge down on his shoe....cut through the shoe and into his toes.
Trip to the ER with a towel wrapped around his shoe for wound cleaning, stitches, bandages, etc. Went home in an air cast boot & couldn't bend his foot until the wounds started to heal.

He kept the bloody sneaker with the axe cut through the toe box as a memento

BTW...it is NOT broken...for that matter the bruises on my shin and ankle hurt a lot worse but aren't nearly as photogenic...

Years ago I was involved in a shouting match with a contractor who had failed to connect the sewer line from a house to the sewer manhole in the street. The contractor called me a few names and rather than lose my temper, I walked him to the manhole and flipped the cover open with a sewer hook. The lid flipped up toward me and landed across the toes of my right foot. I knew I had crushed it, but I was so angry I pointed in the manhole and said "See? It's dry as a bone. That should be flowing from that house!".
He apologized and I left. I could feel my heart beating in my toes and could hardly see because it hurt so bad. When I got to my office I looked down and my sock was saturated with blood. I drove right to emergency. I had smashed my toe so bad it split the skin all the way around my big toe nail and an x-ray revealed the bone in my toe was in about 6 pieces. I wore a cam walker boot for 8 weeks and a flat wooden shoe for months after that. Just the feeling of air touching it hurt.
 
On a related topic: I can't believe you folks who work in jobs involving lifting, moving, or otherwise manipulating heavy stuff aren't wearing steel- or composite-toed boots/shoes...
 
So, yeah...fractured big toe, under-nail hematoma, the bruise on my shin and ankle went hot...

Going to the Podiatrist tomorrow morning to probably have the nail removed...ordered a walking boot (they gave me a shoe, but hey, go big or go home)...antibiotics for the infection...more ice and rest...

And of course "Hey, next time you drop heavy things on your feet don't wait a week to come see us"...
 
Hope it's feeling better after a bit of time.

FYI, I have not had a complete set of non-purple toenails in about 30 years (playing and refereeing soccer, I get stomped on with cleats regularly.) My left big-toe hasn't had a complete nail in quite a while (about two years), and I'm concerned that it's never going to grow back currectly,...
