Can someone please be explaining to me the appeal of what is called Cheap Trick?

Also,nobody goes to their concerts anymore, they're too crowded.
 
A guy I worked with in the '80s at the local newspaper was a rabid autograph seeker.

He told the story of going to a Cheap Trick concert and sneaking backstage after the show. First guy he runs into was Rick Nielsen, coming out of a doorway, wearing nothing but a towel after just having taken a shower. After asking if it would be a bad time to get an autograph, he said Rick grabbed him by the throat and dragged him to an outside emergency exit door and threw him out of the venue. If the story is true, and I doubt my coworker was lying, that Rick Nielsen guy has no sense of humor :tongue:
 
They were proto power pop/punk with a sense of humor and some good riffs. Like Blink 182 or Green day, but with good riffs.

Smurfco needs to stop with the hat shaming. It's 2018.

I would probably have done the same thing, if not worse.
 
I know them a bit. When I dated a gal from Rockford, her younger sister was dating Miles (they were 14 at the time). One afternoon "Miles' dad" was to come pick up his son ... and what do you know, it's Rick (hat and all) at the door. We wound up having a few dinners at the (horrible) Rockford Country Club with the Nielsons and Zanders. Robin showed me how to balance a spoon on my nose. One of the very stupidest things I've ever said to a musician (no, I won't repeat it here) was something the dumb, drunk me said to Rick at the RCC. He was extremely funny about it, and having been around him a few dozen hours, I will say I don't believe the 'throw the guy out' story. He just was not at all the type for violence.

They are regular guys from the upper midwest. Here's a video of Robin wandering around after the stage collapsed in Ottawa -- and you can see his concern for the guy who was working for them ( ).

They are one of the all time great rock bands; they've written 30-40 songs that are canonically superb. And as HIAR noted, just an amazing live band.

Let’s not go crazy. They’re a great cult act, sure. But let’s not overvalue the compositional abilities the guys who brought us “The Flame.”

Theory: Cheap Trick is to cooler rock geeks (e.g., Steve Albini) what Kiss was to borelords like Dave Grohl and Rivers Cuomo.

Well, if that story my coworker told wasn't true, then I stand corrected. I just had no reason to doubt him, he wasn't one of those guys that told tall tales or had to one-up somebody by telling a better story. And he did have TONS of autographs from famous people. It was his hobby.
 
You have all convinced me. What album of this band Cheap Trick is a good place to start for a baffled adult who only knows the radio hits????

This is the show I saw on TV! Instant fan! Saw them at the Orpheum theater in Boston shortly after.

I think the second album, In Color, is some of their best work.

Budokan captures them live at that period. It was also the album that exploded. Radio picked up on the live version of I Want You and played it relentlessly. Except you couldn't get the Budokan record in the US at the time cuz it was import only.
