You can avoid a lot of the planned obsolecense stuff by buying the simplest unit possible. Fewer moving parts, more fixable, older/well established technology, etc. etc.
And as an added benefit - they're cheap.
We got a fairly fancy new range a while ago, but we both like to cook, and it had some features that other models didn't. But when it comes to stuff like washer/dryer, dishwasher, etc. - stuff that nobody actually enjoys using - I say go as basic as possible.
