Am I a hypocrite.

Every time I see some cool old Hondo, Aria, etc. guitar for sale locally at a great price I get excited for a minute and then see the neck plate on the back and think “Meh, I’m not paying $260 for an old bolt-on guitar.” Meanwhile, last year I spent over $3,500 on MIA bolt-on basses and I just spent $1,000 on a used bolt-on guitar for The Boy. Does it make sense to just blow off lower-end bolt-on instruments because they probably are crappy? Or am I just a pretentious hypocrite?
 
Here in the UK, back in the late 80s, early 90s, Aria were shipping some really good guitars, certainly in their mid to upper range guitars. Hondo, I never really saw anywhere at that time though but got the impression they were cheap.
 
Most Arias I encountered back in the day were pretty solid and some were outstanding.
The Hondo's....not so much. I remember a buds Hondo bolt on LP shaped object that was impossible to get in tune in two different chords at the same time no matter how much or what part of it you tweaked and the neck was about as stable as a rubber band.
So no, you arn't pretentious. Some of those old guitars were decent instruments, a few were outstanding, and a whole lot of em sucked balls.
Just depends on the guitar.
 
There are good guitars and there are not-so-good guitars.
Bolt-on has nothing to do with it.

Also, old, trashy guitars have their place. Some have a certain sound.
Some are just fun because you can beat the shit out of them without stressing about it.
 
Some of the old Japanese bolt-on copies got a bad rep. I have no idea if it's justified or not. Some of them look pretty cool to me. Whatever works.
 
I can’t criticize anyone for a little healthy guitar snobbery. If I did, that would make me the hypocrite.
 
I've owned both an old bolt on Honda and a bolt on Aria Pro II.

Both were shitty. Assuming they may be shitty is therefore a hypothesis more than a simple prejudice.
 
My Aria Pro II Diamond is a blast. Plays just fine.

The pint is, play every guitar. You might find a gem.
