Alllright! Which is Cooler? Reverend Club King or Baritone Tele?
As I mentioned in Punk Kitty's Reverend thread, I've been thinking about using part of my income tax refunds (which should arrive sometime next week), to get another Reverend Club King (I've been regretting selling my old Club King HB for some time now, but the GAS for getting another one has been low intensity in level). I have a line on examples of all 3 versions of the Club King
Club King HB - no longer made (mine was a Club King HB; it was a great sounding guitar)
Club King 290 - cheapest of the bunch (I like P-90s, and I don't have a P90 loaded guitar, but I'm not sure if I like P90s over HBs or the mutant FilterTron-type, Revtron pickups)
Club King RT - maybe a way to sort of get my Gretsch cake, and eat it too? The Revtrons are a bit hotter than FilterTrons, but without the muddiness PowerTrons have.
You would think that having played guitar for 34 years, I would know which of the 3 I'd like, but noooooo! I can't make up my mind. They all have some pretty good features to me.
And now to muddy the waters further:
Fender Blacktop Baritone Telecaster
Yesterday, out of boredom, I paid my favorite guitar shop a visit (Cream City Music). They had a new baritone Fender Tele. Having had baris, and 7-string guitars in the past, I was naturally interested in taking it for a spin. It sounded nice clean, the distorted tones were hard to rate decently (Fender Hot Rod Deluxes [I was using one as a test amp] have crappy sounding distortion IMO]), due to none of the high gain amps being plugged in (and I didn't feel like screwing around with plugging one in, since I was just doing a quick and dirty checkout of the guitar). It sounded nice clean, and played OK. But, I will admit that the Blacktop series guitars seem to be a mixed bag. There have been complaints that the pickups in the Blacktops are a little on the blah side soundwise (and I will admit that the ones I had in the Blacktop Jaguar I used to have, did sound kind of generic). Also, for me, 3 pickup guitars can be a waste of resources, since I seldom have used the middle pickup, and middle/neck, middle/bridge pickup combinations. With those negatives in mind, why would I include this guitar? Well, I kind of miss having a guitar that can do the lower register stuff like my old Baris and 7-strings did. Also, at a price for of $450, it's about $150 to $300 cheaper than the Club Kings are. Still, with the right arguments, this lower price point would become moot.
So, with the above thoughts in mind, what do the esteemed MWGFers think? I've included a poll. And yes, it's pathetic that somebody with as much playing experience as me, would be this wissy washy!
