Albums of which the sales numbers surprise you

I do. I love my album collection & I have every single one since I was able to purchase them myself. Ever since Record Store Day came into existence, artists have been getting into releasing their work on vinyl. Maybe even before then. One record store has been a thriving business, at least in my area. I prefer vinyl on my turntable as opposed to any other media & continue to buy albums occasionally. The quality is way better than when we were youngsters & generally 180 gms. The packaging is top of the line.
I used to buy at least one album a week from the time I was 16 until probably 24. I had a massive collection and it was a pain in the ass to move. I took it all down to this huge used record store we had except for maybe 3o and that was around 1997, I don't regret it.
i was an audiophile back in the day but I mean the difference was big then. You had real components and then you had the shitty all in one Emerson dealies. Nowdays meh...it all sounds decent enough, i just don't get hung up on sound "quality". As long as it's not coming out of a tiny trasistor radio circa 1982 I'm good.

Yeah, I hear you.

For convenience you can't really beat streaming. Great for when you just want something in the background or as a travel companion.

When it comes to bands I'm a fan of and when someone locally (and a few in here) releases new music I will buy the CD's or whatever format they have available.
With writing and releasing stuff myself I know how much that means, as streaming music pays pretty much nothing.

I do apple music but I also buy occasionally from bandcamp. i buy the digital album and not the vinyl , cassette or cd

At least 99% of what I buy today is from Bandcamp. I buy a couple albums a month, usually bands that YouTube channels that I like introduce me two.

I had vinyl as a kid and all I remember was the shortcomings of the format. I think I’ve bought one vinyl album in the last thirty years and that was just because I wanted to support the artist and bought her super deluxe edition that also included mp3s, so the vinyl and CD are still in the wrappers. I buy maybe one CD every five years—I just bought Wanda Jackson’s new album so she could look at good sales numbers for her swan song.

Can't remember exactly where I heard it, but apparently last year vinyl for the first time actually outsold CDs in the UK. And I imagine the trend is something similar in a lot of countries.

In the first six months of 2021, 19.2 million vinyl albums were sold, outpacing CD volume of 18.9 million, according to analytics firm MRC Data, as fans look for tangible ways to connect with musicians.

(But this is all a bit "Ferret tossing is the fastest growing spectator sport" compare to the glory days, obviously

I rarely even see cds in peoples cars anymore....probably because most cars don't even have those anymore.

I gotta wonder how may of these sales are repat sales though or are they new people buying one or two until the novelty wears off like especially the older folks who have been there before. Is it mainly millinials and Gen. Y or whatever they are? I just can't see the attraction having been there myself...
  • takes up space in home
  • you can only listen at home, in one room
  • fragile...takes time to properly prolong use (i,e cleaning before each play)
  • expensive
or is it like Nostalgia for a few purchases much like a polaroid camera until you realise...I get better pics on my phone....there is an app for that already.....I just stick them away in a shoebox and never look at them again.

I mean i can see the reason for the youths buying into it because everything old is new again but the old farts...I don't get it.
Yeah, they quit putting CD players in cars a few years ago, but they all come with Sirius XM as a replacement. As one who has subscribed to Sirius for a few years, I find them to fall into the same trap as FM radio stations. That is, they tend to repeat songs fairly often. Certainly not nearly as bad as FM, but if you listen to Sirius daily, you'll notice the repeats.

I get that having physical media can be a bit of a pain and can also be unreliable (scratches, etc.), but I kinda miss having a CD player. Sure I can load a bunch of songs on my phone or a thumb drive and scroll/select what I feel like listening too by artist or genre, but there is a simple convenience to wanting to hear artist X and just popping in their CD.
